Double Edit - Holy crap, after reading through the comments it's no wonder the country is circling the drain. Lazy bastards. I know a couple people like this, that think they should get a trophy for getting out of bed and going to work every day. Such a sense of entitlement... I blame the school systems.

I haven't read through all of the comments, but I took a sort of opposite conclusion from this: for some (perhaps more than previously expected, based on what comments I have read!) it takes a lot of effort just to keep on par with "normal" adults. No entitlement here when it takes all that effort just to pull yourself out of the red, figuratively speaking. The trophy in the actual blog post is nothing more than proof that she can be a normal adult if she works at it, so that counts for something! ...but ultimately it doesn't ask for any recognition beyond a "normal" adult.

The article has to end with a maniacal, irresponsible INTERNET FOREVER or else it's just really depressing.

At least, that's how I see it... :p Perhaps that alone is depressing. Ah well. I could actually probably type up a ton on what I think the mechanisms are at work here psychologically, but very few people are interested in a discussion on psychology from someone who has a grand total of two psych classes under his belt with a passing familiarity of Corsini's and the DSM. :p

I guess that's fair... the comments got me more riled up than the article itself I guess. But still, why does it take some people such a monumental amount of effort to do the stuff that (IMO) is bare minimum for a self-sustaining adult life?

Personally, I think it's about prioritization and best use of time. This girl isn't saying she can't pay her bills. She just doesn't get around to it except a few times a year. It's not that she can't go buy groceries, she is just too lazy. There are a lot of people in the world who just can't pay their bills or get enough food to eat - that's a whole separate discussion. There are people who can't get out of their house and they have to wait for a relative to come around and take them out. I know there are people who genuinely work hard and still can't make ends meet. But to have the ability, and just not do it because you don't feel like it...? Life's too hard to do the "adult" stuff? Forgive me if my only response is WAAAAAAAH.

Maybe this girl is working two jobs and that's why she can't get around to paying the bills or hitting the food store on a regular basis. I doubt it. She certainly has time to spend on the internet. She can't find the time to be an adult, or it's too boring, or it's just not important enough.

And because I do act like an adult, my taxes have to go help her when she loses her house because she's four months behind, and has to go on food stamps.

God damn hippies.

You see, I understand exactly what this woman is going through. I feel exactly the same way. It's not that we don't have the time (though that can be the case), but sometimes it feels so hard to work up the energy to do stuff, even easy stuff. It's not a sense of entitlement. I don't feel entitled to anything. It's a sense of guilt and anger. I hate myself when I surf the internet, watch TV, when I can be doing all my chores and activities I've set up for myself. I should mention that I probably have a slight case of OCD where you set up tasks for yourself and you keep doing so infinitely. There never feels like an end in sight as a result. Procrastination is just so easy to do. It's like the ThinkGeek poster says, "Hard Work Often Pays Off After Time, but Laziness Always Pays Off Now."

I can't even work up the energy to fill out my applications for graduate school, especially the statement of purpose. This is pathetic, but I feel there's an underlying cause behind all of this. I think it's a fear of risk and the future. I think there are overthinkers (e.g. me) who tend to be risk-averse because they always do a realistic risk assessments of situations. From this, they can figure out their odds are pretty low on a lot of things. The risk-taker just goes in and does it because they don't know (or care) about the potential risk. I'll use the guy at the bar as an example. There' two guys: one guy who just goes up to a woman versus the guy who sits and think the ways to do it, and the what the odds of success are. Guess who the woman ends up going home with at the end of the night?

yes, there is something "wrong" with this woman. However it isn't something unique. She exhibits the same tendencies most others of her generation do, which stem from a falsified guarantee of an easy and pre-earned lifestyle, and a spoiled upbringing which reinforced it.
