*insert bitter old person rant about times changing and technology, etc*

We no longer have any video stores in our town. The one we have been going to has just gone out of business as have the others. No more going to the video store to rent a movie. We have to go to a stupid Red box at Kroger. (have not actually done that yet.)

Local article here: http://www.cdispatch.com/news/article.asp?aid=6774

We have no more music stores (last one in the mall went out of business last year) and now no more video stores. What's next? :(

Yeah - its kinda frustrating. I was helping my little brother with a paper on "12 Angry Men" and we had to call all kindsa places before we finally found one that had it. Netflix is great and all, but not for the impulsive viewer. Redboxes fulfill the gap somewhat for newer stuff but you're pretty much screwed if you get a hankering to watch an older movie. I really wish there was more content watchable online.

I haven't gone to a video rental store in over two years now, probably. Couldn't be happier about that either.

It's been at least 10 years since I did :)

Netflix + Redbox for instant gratification of new releases = win

Though I can imagine this being more about the degradatio of your hometown then about the availability of movies.

This this this!!!

Our favorite restaurant for Sunday lunch went out of business a few months ago and like everything else they were making money hand over fist here but the national chain itself failed.

Furthermore, I didn't really pay attention but it seemed to me that the video store had new releases a lot quicker than the Red Box did, and we like to rent all our movies in Blu Ray and the Red Box doesn't have that either where we are.

Like Screeling, I'm prone to grabbing a couple of "oldies but goodies" along with the new releases and can't really do that with these boxes.

I've used Netflix before and it was alright, but I didn't like it enough to keep it. I much prefer going to the video store with the kids and letting everyone pick something out. That era appears to be gone.

What about your local public library? They should have some sort of selection, no?

Sadly, Aethien, our local public library is a joke. I grew up on the West Coast in a much smaller town and even then we were always on the top of technology and had the very best of educational videos and such at the library. We never rented from a store when I was a kid, the National Geographic specials and documentaries at the library were soooo much better and as soon as a book hit the shelves we had it available at the library.
The library here does not have that technology or selection....its pretty awful actually.
Our public resources as a whole are not that great. Even our YMCA is old and decrepit.
I hate to bring it up, but even though we are past the days (supposedly) of great racism and segregation, it still seems like anything that is used primarily by the black (read: economically impoverished) community is not invested into at all. As in, the rich old white people spend a lot of money at the bookstore but you won't see them at the public library. The YMCA here is falling apart but out in "whiteville suburbia" on the edge of town there is a much nicer and newer YMCA. And when the black people started moving out there they started a whole new rich white people subdivision 20 minutes away and even built a new school (private school) and everything. I live in the ghetto where there are gunshots every week and the library is within walking distance and so is the YMCA but they're not worth a crap.
I'm not bitter.....

Ack, sorry to hear that. Sounds like you're going to be at the mercy of TCM and AMC ... Which isn't all bad, but doesn't allow for much spontaneity of your own making.

We have satellite, luckily, so I have been watching a butt load of the Discovery channel, Animal Planet, Discovery health, The Learning Channel, and all sorts of feed your brain stuff which I loooove....and we have sucked it up once or twice and did the video on demand thing (but only twice).
We'll just have to adjust our family entertainment unfortunately.

This is one of the things that makes me cherish my obsession with movies.

I am my own video store: if I cannot find something I want to watch... I have issues.

There have been a few movies I have been unable to find for purchase, but overall... I have had no issues. And no rental fees or late fees with owning the movie either. Storage is a ***** at time though.

Packing for a move in a few weeks (YAY we got our rental house!!) and I filled 5 of the medium Home Depot Packing Boxes with DVDs.

What about used DVD stores? You can usually find movies for about $5 and then sell them back for $2-3 when you're done.

We're not a big enough city to have one of those, Hop, but it sounds like a good idea.

We do have the big 5 dollar bin at Wal-Mart. Never know what you will find in there.

True. And now that we have our DVD collection in storage, if we wait a couple of months and go look at them it will be like going to the video store! yay!

Along with netflix, I also make liberal use of Amazon's Video on Demand store (is it still called Unbox?). It's available via Tivo and Roku (and possibly other sources... is it on the 360/PS3/Wii yet?), as well as on your PC. I've purchased full seasons of several shows that I missed a few episodes of, and ended up watching them without commercials, in marathon fashion... me likes!
