They've changed that in 4th Edition. It's all essence now, no more body index.

Yea, 4th is much better.

Also, we may be seeing a new edition, depending on the outcome of the Catalyst lawsuit.

The way 4th ed does IPs is worse, not better ;)

I paged through a SR 4e sourcebook, I thought it was ridiculous how they are now handling the Matrix.

I haven't actually played since 2nd, sadly. I have a 3e main book around but I've never gotten a 4e. :(

The matrix/hacking stuff is pretty much the only part of 4th that I like better than 2nd.

Here's the part I have the problem with. Half of Shadowrun is technology. Unlike magic, which you can pretty much just declare to work in some fashion, technology is something that is more bound by rules of science fiction, wherein you can extrapolate from the present, but you can't just do idiotic things. Had any of the designers bothered to investigate things, here's how I imagine it going.
