And no one ever gets raped in Africa, and women are definitely treated as equals to men, with equal access to the kinds of things that can help them make responsible decisions and protect themselves against potential problems. Am I right?

Irrelevant. Rape accounts for a very small proportion of pregnancies, and more to the point, starving people generally don't have the energy to rape people.

As for women not being treated as equals, they need to start demanding it. Women in the West got to be equals when they demanded equality; men didn't just up and say "gee, maybe we ought to be more open minded about women!" Women are 50% of society; if they aren't getting those things its at least half their own fault.

Well it is a racist view, African women must be inferior to western women, as they can not achieve or demand equality as the western (white women). There for they need enlightened women, and men to help bring them up and save them, but not in a Christian sense because that is cultural taboo....

I'm guessing he isn't going to concern himself with them.

That said...

Monte:

Are you implying that the majority, or even a sizable minority, of pregnancies in Africa are the result of rape?

I know you all hate google statistics, but I don't really have a better way of getting them.

According to this site, South Africa leads the world in rapes per capita: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_percap-crime-rapes-per-capita

Wiki confirms that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_South_Africa#Statistics

I don't know if you can logically conclude from that if more rapes=to more pregnancies from rape.

Here is an article that says in the US the adult pregnancy rate from rape is 4.7% (page 3): http://www.rape.co.za/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=875

The US is number 9 on the list of countries with the highest rapes per capita. If #9 on the list is at 4.7% pregnancy from rape, what would #1 be?

Couldn't find any stats on pregnancy rates by rape in Africa though, but I thought this article was interesting:

http://www.thebody.com/content/art8109.html

Quote:
South African inventor Sonette Ehlers on Wednesday unveiled a new device that, when worn inside a woman's body like a tampon, hooks onto a man's penis during intercourse, and is intended to deter sexual assault and rape, Reuters reports. The device -- which is called Rapex -- is made of latex and attaches to the penis by shafts of sharp barbs. The device can only be removed by surgery, which would identify assailants to hospital staff and police, Ehlers said. She said the device might help to reduce the number of rapes occurring in South Africa, which has the highest rate of sexual assault in the world. The device also could reduce the risk of pregnancy or infection with HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases by acting as a female condom, according to Ehlers (Reuters, 8/31). She said the device would be so painful that it would disable rapists immediately, allowing women to escape. She added that the device would not cause any long-term physical damage to the assailant and could not accidentally injure women. However, some anti-rape advocates are concerned that the device might provoke rapists and increase violence against women. In addition, some women's advocates said the device puts the burden on women to address the problem, instead of focusing on societal issues as motivating factors of rape. Ehlers said the country's rape problem is so severe that women need protection now. The single-use, disposable device will be sold for about 15 cents each, and Ehlers said she plans to market the condoms in packages of 10 at major supermarkets (Dixon, Los Angeles Times, 9/1). Production of Rapex is scheduled to begin next year. According to police statistics, about 50,000 rapes are reported each year in South Africa, but experts say the real figures could be as high as 200,000 annually because acquaintance rapes and rapes of children usually are not reported (Reuters, 8/31).

That was 2005...wonder what happened to that idea?

I would bet that women would be afraid to use it.

I'd think that a man that's already going to rape you would be none too thrilled about having a bunch of sharpass barbs embedded in his rapidly detumescing member... and now, instead of just being raped, you're getting beaten to death too.

South Africa is also not one of the countries with a serious hunger problem. Economically, South Africa is far above the norm for Africa. So far it's government has managed to avoid flushing its agriculture down the toilet with "Land reform" as Zimbabwe has.
