Not sure where the best forum is but this is personal so I'll put it here. I've smoked two cigarettes in my life, and I really enjoyed them. I'm always reminiscent of them.

The pro is that I really enjoy smoking. The cons are the cost, health issues, and that my parents would hate it. However I see long term health issues as a philosophical discussion... longevity of my life isn't too important to me.

So is it worth it? Should I really refrain from something I enjoy so much? I feel that if everyone else smoked, then I would happily do so also. It's mostly peer pressure that is making me abstain. If I were the last man on Earth, then I would definitely smoke cigarettes. I think this is a strong reason for smoking.

I'm seriously thinking about this so useful feeback would be nice.

as a former smoker, and one who still feels the ill effects it caused my body... I strongly suggest a NO.

But as it is your life to lose....

No, it is a crutch, a weakness. It adds nothing of value to your life and makes you dependent upon it by addicting you to it. Eventually it will kill you painfully and miserably.

It's too late; I just bought my first pack. I'll probably take a lot of heat for this.

It is never too late. Throw them away, or realize that you had already made up your mind and were just trolling here knowing the answers you would get.

As far as giving you heat for it, it is your life Lex, and smoking is still legal. You are just choosing yet another self-destructive activity. You know it, we know it, and we know we can't save you from your own lack of wisdom.

You've made a very costly choice, in more ways than you can know. You will come to know them intimately, and you will regret this choice.

Sucker.

Ventilators are a wonderful way to breathe, they do the job for you, no work on your part, you get to be paralyzed and sedated for days on end, and then when we wake you up..you can go back to smoking for a few more weeks before you take the ventilator vacation again!

It's job security for me!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive now. How much is a pack up to where you are? I think it's like 10 bucks here. 10 bucks a pack! Craziness.

I doubt you will have the intestinal fortitude to quit if you start. Just something for you to consider.

Everyone suffers from health problems eventually. Why is it better to have them later than sooner? I don't understand this.

Just go ahead and start main lining heroin. Smoking is for wimps. You're way cooler than what smoking has to offer.

I can't accomplish my goals while on heroin... and I don't know where to buy it. :P

Also to be honest, I would prefer dying sooner than later. Maybe this will change but it's how I've felt for months.

This might be my favorite thread ever on any incarnation of The Glade. I can't bring myself to care, no matter how hard I try, what the hell you do. Nor can I bring myself to care if this is a real honest to goodness quandry you find yourself in, or if you are just trolling, and baiting those here who are good-hearted and good-natured enough to give a rat's *** about the quality of your life. Either way, I offer you this: You are a **** idiot.

I think I might quit now before it becomes a habit. I thought cigarettes might make me happier but they haven't.

I think my writing style in general is "trolling", however I am not lying about starting to smoke.

Heroin man, you're a smart guy I'm sure you will find a supplier. Plus, Heroin has the word Hero in it.

Quitting does suck indeed.

I discovered a long time ago that people who smoke were weak. Weak physically, weak mentally, weak emotionally....smokers are weak people.

In this day and age having a cigarette in your mouth is no longer seen as cool (except by other like-minded psychologically weak people).

If you are still trying to play social mind games and pick up chicks, doing it while prominently displaying your stinky-cancer-causing crutch to get through life would not be starting off on the right foot.

I love seeing the judgmental nature of people expose itself.

I love seeing the passive-aggressive barbs from smokers justifying their addictions.

I don't smoke. So take your self-righteousness elsewhere, please.

Sorry, DFK, thought you were the one defending cigar smoking the last time we had this little debate.
My bad.
For the record, I'm not trying to be self-righteous or judgemental. I smoked for years...just trying to keep people from starting.

Fair enough.

I just have a real problem when people criticize the lifestyle choices of others, provided that their choices don't cause harm to people around them.

In the case of smoking: Lex alleges to have adequate income to support that lifestyle, so it isn't like he's misappropriating welfare. He doesn't have children to be harmed from second-hand smoke, and the long-term costs will fall on his health insurance, if he'll be able to get it. The only potential harm to others, as it stands, is if he survives to Medicare age, and costs the rest of us many to treat his inevitable COPD or lung cancer.

In a free society, people need to be able to determine what goes into their body. Now, I'm with Rynar: I don't really give two shits about Lex and what he does do, doesn't do, or pretends to do or not do on the internet; but the level of apparent vitriol against "smokers" as a group is a bit asinine. If you consider all smokers weak, how would you care for those who enjoy it (and are not merely addicts) to judge you in return?

Supplementally: I do have a cigar on occasion, but that doesn't make me a smoker, anymore than having a beer with dinner once a month makes me a drinker. The connotations of both those phrases indicates regular and frequent usage.

After much consideration, I think smoking is not in strong enough alignment with my goals in life, so I'm choosing to discontinue. But it was fun to try.

Also I think some people here are way too judgmental about smokers.

I'm not really aware of how much cigarettes costs because I don't smoke and neither does anyone I know. Well, there are people I know that do smoke, but I have so little concern for their well being I literally (to quote Slim Shady) wouldn't "piss on fire to put them out". That I don't care about them has nothing to do with their smoking.

Anyway, when did cigarettes go up to like $6/pack? I remember them being $2.50 for a pack of Marlboro Reds or Newports or whatever cheapies in college about 6 years back which was the last time I bought a pack.

A lot of States have been raising cigarette taxes as a way of funding care for people with tobacco usage related illnesses. Federal tax is $1 a pack, some States are pushing $4 a pack in additional taxes, which makes the cost there $5 plus what the store and manufacturer and all the middlemen need.

Here is a link to a site which provides lots of useful and useless information on the tobacco situation and some other substance abuse issues in the United States. I get it at work as part of my tasks with co-occurring disorders. Tobacco addiction qualifies as a substance use addiction, albeit a legal one.

http://www.cesar.umd.edu/cesar/cesarfax.asp

This one in particular speaks on the tobacco excise taxes
