Maguire and Raimi are out, Spider Man 4 is taking the story back to highschool.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “Now everything begins anew, and that’s got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can’t wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012.”

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. Ninja'd. But it's by FarSkee, who is no slouch in the movie and comic guru department, so I wouldn't feel bad. =P

What's interesting to me, though, is that -- and this could just be me misremembering the relationship in the past -- but Marvel Studios seems to be getting more billing and mention in the buzz. I wonder if the intention is, especially taking him back to high school, to plan on keeping the talent and this movie continuity when Sony loses its 6 movie license and it reverts back to Marvel, who will give it to Marvel Studios? In which case, will this reboot be a part of the Marvel Studios cross-title tie-ins?

I just hope we find a more suitably sarcastic and quippy actor than Tobey.

OK, so here's what Sony's doing...

They've hired Marc Webb, who has exactly one film, a romantic comedy (albeit a very highly regarded one that I'd like to see but haven't yet had a chance) to direct.

They've giving it a mere $80 million budget. Now, skyrocketing film budgets are a major criticism of mine; I cannot fathom the idea that a film requires over $100 million to be made, particularly when you've got brilliant, top-notch genre films like District 9 being made for a mere $40 million. Most of the money goes to exorbitant actors' salaries, and to be honest, actors aren't all that crucial to the process.

They're making it in 3D. Well, that was a given, but it's not necessarily a negative.

But here's the kicker: Sony's just scheduled the film to debut July 4th weekend, 2012...the same date that Star Trek 2 already reserved.

Why is Sony attempting to torpedo this, a reboot of one of their biggest-ever franchises? Do not understand.

can Captain Kirk be written so badly that even William Shatner could not play it?

I totally support this. But only if they get Christopher Nolan to direct it, Christian Bale as Spiderman, and Katie Holmes as Mary Jane. Morgan Freeman can be Aunt Mae.

I am not a huge fan of this franchise but...rebooting one of the top-grossing movies of all time, that's not even ten years old? Are they STUPID?

I have to say that I am a huge Spiderman fan, have been since I was a kid. I believe the reasoning for the reboot would be that the mythos becomes far more complicated the older that Peter Parker becomes. In order for the movies to make sense to the general audience, and to save screen time, they need to keep the storyline as simple as possible. So a rewind makes sense in that regard.

Also, since they are changing the creative team completely it's best to break away from the previous incarnation to minimize comparisons (like they did with the Hulk, Batman, etc.). It's better for the new team to start fresh than to pick up where the old team left off and do a horrible job (which judging by Spidey 3 is almost certain).

My final point, I fully support a reboot because it gives them a new opportunity to do justice to Venom!

I think if you watch this that he makes a good showing of what he could be as Peter Parker.

Trying to be cool, trying to be tough, but also very vulnerable and comic.

If the director can bring that out from him, and we avoid the stuff that Spider-Man 3 wrought... I am good with this.

I love Raimi but 3 villains seems to be the franchise killer.

I liked Maguire but the night club scene should have been canned after 1 take. Seriously.

Dunst I can live without, though Howard was good as the competition, and Topher was great as Brock.

I liked Sandman, too. It's just we should have had all Sandman or all Venom and Green Goblin and the amnesia should have been a B plot.
