Cthulu and the other characters and objects mentioned are drawn from the horror of H.P. Lovecraft, whose short stories tended to focus on dark tales of people stumbling across forbidden knowledge which Man Was Not Meant To Know, the kind of dark, evil stuff that drives men insane. Most of the characters used in this video are "old ones", dark gods which various cults in his fiction would madly try to summon, and which would promptly threaten to consume the world and the like.

His works are considered cult classics by many, and appropriating the dread, terror-inducing and hideous cosmic entity Cthulu as a cute, cuddly plushie or animated character is sort of an internet meme based on irony.
