This is part of a bigger plan. Facebook will now charge 14.99 a month.

There is currently an exploit in the WoW implementation of Real ID that exposes the Real Name on the account of the character your are currently logged into:
/run BNSendWhisper(BNGetInfo(),"Test")
If you run the above you will receive a whisper from yourself via the Battle.Net system and of course the system will show who you are whispering/receiving the whisper from. As a result your Real Name can be exposed by addons.

An AddOn could trivially do this and then hide the outgoing and incoming whispers from you with the chat system.

If this makes you uncomfortable there are two ways to protect yourself from this:

a) Disable the Real ID system entirely by turning on the Parental Controls feature. You will be removed from all Real ID friends lists and will have no Real ID friends if you do this. You can do this at:
http://battle.net/parents

Hasn't on my account. In fact, I disabled RealID vis-a-vis parental controls the day it was available. I can still get the game to output my information and that of other players on command.

Got time for a test? If you'd like, create a character on Arathor and I'll log on as Taskiss

Activison: As if I could forget. Listen, Blizzard, there's something about the forums you should know. Oh no. It's too late. These people have all been trolled. They may look fine now, but it's a matter of time before they nerd rage.

Blizzard: What?

Activison: Your entire forums must be purged.

Blizzard: How can you even consider that? There's got to be some other way

Activison: Damn it, Blizzard. As your master, I order you to RealID these forums!

Blizzard: You are not my master, bob. Nor would I obey that command if you were!

Activison: Then I must consider forcing this.

Blizzard: Forcing it? Have you lost your mind, Activison?

Activison: Have I? Lord Blizzard, by my endless resources and sovereignty of my company, I hereby program your forums with RealID.

WoWplayers: Activison, you can't just...

Activison: It's done! Those of you who have the will to make more money, follow me! The rest of you... get out of my sight.

Blizzard: You've just crossed a terrible threshold, Activison.

Activison: Subscribers?

WoWplayers: I'm sorry, Activison. We can't watch you do this.

Should be able to in a bit. They might have made some server side changes since yesterday, as I emailed them my work.

Me: Thank you.

Me: Yes, I was wondering if I could please speak with So-And-So?
Manager: ::pause:: Sure. Please hold.
Me: Thank you.

MV: Hello?
Me: Hello, is this So-And-So?
MV: Yes.
Me: First and foremost, I want to apologize for calling you at work, and I also apologize if this doesn’t make sense, but are you Sikketh, from Thunderlord?
MV: ::pause:: Yes.
Me: So yeah, that took me about 20 minutes and it was pretty easy.
MV: Wow. Ok.
Me: Also, just for shits and giggles, is your address ?
MV: yep.
Me: Phone number 555-555-5555?
MV: yep.
Me: I know your parents’ names are Name1 and Name2, I know your room is painted blue and I know you have a cute dog. I know where you were on the 4th of July and I know when you got back. Don’t worry, I’m not a crazy, I’m not going to do anything with it, and I’m not going to post your address or anything anywhere. I just wanted you to know that what I did was very easy and very free, from just your name and toon’s name. You have a good day, and thanks for being a good sport about it.
MV: Hey, I did basically ask for it – thank you. I was wrong about RealID.

So what part does Facebook officially play, then?
The feature we are shipping with is this 'Add A Friend' feature. I can log into Battle.net and instead of knowing your email address or deduce who you are by Real ID, I can simply log into Facebook within a special interface we have created in Battle.net and import, if you will, all my friends who are on Facebook and are also on Battle.net into my social network here on Battle.net. Essentially, with one click I'm populating my social network in Battle.net on Facebook.

I just gave my guild on tanaris a farewell post.

I will be giving my RL friends on Gorgonnash a farewell also. Then I will be cancelling both my and my daughters subscriptions. Were it just me.. that would be one thing. If someone steals my identity.. what are they going to do? Improve my credit rating?

But my daughter?? Stampy needs not the hassle with this.

I was looking forward to Diablo 3; but this is no longer a concern for me either. I would gladly give away stuff, but it is all soulbound.

**Edit: my daughter already has a creepy stalker (uncle Müs) in her life.. she doesn't need another. heh

I wish I could cancel a credit card payment, just so I could put in why I'm not reupping. I've been paying with game cards for awhile now though, so I don't have the option.

Didn't have cata preordered yet as I was waiting for the collector's edition announcement, and hadn't decided what to do about SC2 yet, so unfortunately can't contribute there either. I just know I won't be buying any of these unless blizz changes their mind on this whole situation.

I haven't subscribed to WoW in quite a while, so this doesn't affect me. However, I have to believe this is going to have a pretty substantial effect on their subscribers. I know it may only be 1% that quit, but even that is a huge number for the amount of people playing WoW.

After reading this, I think I now have at least some perspective why they are doing this. I still think they are batshit insane, for the reasons Khross and Stathol mentioned (among many others). The potential for exploits here is extremely high.

I also see where this is supposed to be an opt-in service (RealID is), and when I accessed the parental controls page for my account the first time, I did indeed find that RealID was not enabled by default (yet). Problem is, at this point, I cannot trust Blizzard not to change these settings without my consent. Additionally, there is far more potential for bad than good (see the references to stalkers, etc..), and combined with the risk profile, it's just more than I'm willing to accept.

From Blizzards official site
http://us.blizzard.com/support/article. ... rhtml=true

(** emphasis mine)
Blizzard Parental Controls - Page 2 wrote:
What is Real ID?
Real ID is an optional social-networking feature of our Battle.net online gaming service that allows players to communicate, add each other as friends, and play using their real names and identities. **In order for a player's real name to be displayed to another player in-game, both players must first mutually agree to become Real ID friends. If Real ID is disabled via Parental Controls, your child will not be able use Real ID functions, and only their in-game character name will be displayed when communicating with anyone.

Please note that the real name that is displayed will be the name associated with the account -- meaning it could be a parent's name or a child's name, depending on who set up the account. For more information on Real ID, visit our Real ID page.

And the RealID page
https://us.battle.net/realid/
Blizzard RealID Page wrote:
REAL ID
A New Way to Connect With Your Friends on Battle.net

One of our goals for the new Battle.net is to create the framework for an online gaming experience that is even more accessible, more engaging, and more entertaining than the previous Battle.net. Our new Real ID feature is an integral part of this effort, providing you with advanced ways for forming and maintaining meaningful relationships with your friends on the service.

**Real ID is a completely voluntary and optional level of identity that keeps players connected across all of Battle.net. When you and a friend mutually agree to become Real ID friends, you'll have access to a number of additional features that will enrich your social gaming experience in new and exciting ways.

Read the Real ID FAQ for additional details.

Real Names for Friends:
Your Real ID friends will appear under their real-life names on your friends list, alongside whatever characters they're playing. Gone are the days of having to remember which of your friends is which. You'll also see your friends' real names when chatting, communicating in-game, or viewing their character's profile.

Cross-Game Chat:
With Real ID, friends can now chat cross-game, cross-realm, and cross-faction across all supported Blizzard games. In World of Warcraft and need more players for your Icecrown Citadel raid? You check your Real ID friends list to see if anyone's available, and sure enough, a couple of guildmates are playing a 2v2 ranked match in StarCraft II. Real ID makes it easy to ask them to come along.

Rich Presence:
See additional information on your friends list about what your Real ID friends are up to. Find out what your friends are doing and which games and modes they're playing in real time. Invite that buddy just sitting around in Dalaran to play some StarCraft II with you without fear of interrupting a raid or a heated Wintergrasp match.

Broadcasts:
Broadcast a short status message for all of your Real ID friends to see, whether you want to issue a call-to-arms or let your friends know about an important change of plans. You can also read your friends' broadcast messages on the "Recent Broadcasts" feed on the Battle.net welcome page -- kind of a "corkboard" to leave messages to your friends when offline or busy.

Friend Once, See All Characters:
When you agree to become Real ID friends with another player, both of you will automatically see all the other's characters on your friends list. You'll even see any characters your friend creates in future Blizzard games, carrying your social network forward and helping you stay connected with the people you enjoy playing with most.

See, I didn't really have any problems with realid until the announcement yesterday that it would be required on the forums.

That I have huge problems with. Like many people, my name is pretty uncommon. There's only one other that shows up when you google my name, and he's obviously not me due to the whole living in england thing.

I had spokeo remove my name awhile back, but there's other places that you can't do that, like pipl.com. I'm also mentioned in a few places due to things I have to do for work, so I literally can't do anything about those.

If I posted on the forums and revealed my name, finding data about my schooling, where I live, and all that other stuff is pretty easy to find. I'm not terribly interested in opening myself up like that, thanks.

Midair combat, Patchwerk in three minutes flat

South Park, Ulduar, Garrosh and the Chin

We didn't start the crying
The QQ hasn't ceased
Since warcraft's been released
We didn't start the crying

But you still log on, and on, and on, and on...
