My wife gets those. Friggin nasty. From what I read, there isn't really an effective preventive measure for them. That still true?

Nothing I've found, aside from a tonsillectomy. I have huge freakin' tonsils, so they're a common occurrence, but I've heard too many horror stories of people having their tonsils removed. I've read that mouthwash usage can help, but it seems to make no difference for me.

Had my tonsils removed when I was five. No clue what you are talking about. Condolences though.

From what I've heard, Micheal, the older you are the riskier it is to remove your tonsils.
Bummer Farsky. Gargle with salt water?

Go go 50s and 60s routine procedure! Had mine out when I was ... 6, maybe? Something like that. I got ice cream after it was over, it was a big treat.

If you got a lot of sore throats when you were a kid in the 60s, they just whacked 'em out as a matter of course. But, yeah, can't imagine having it done as an adult. Good luck, 'Sky.

I've tried this and even pickle juice. I'm with you Farsky, I use Listerine daily and still get the buggers from time to time.

I usually get them when I am sick or getting over a cold. Feels like something stuck in the back of your throat when you swallow. I use an oral syringe to rid myself of them. It is curved on the end and you can just fill it water. I believe you can get them from your dentist. I got mine when my wisdom teeth were removed, but it works well for the stones. Had one two months ago come out that was the size of a dime. It was just gross.

Micheal: They are like kidney stones, but do not hurt so bad when leaving the body. People with them can see them in the pockets of the tonsils when they form. They look like food back there more specifically the color of french fries.

Thanks for the graphic description. I think the phrase I'm looking for is, "Eeeeew!"

Yep, feels better, that was it.

Maybe I'm just not old enough, but I have the biggest freaking tonsils and I've never had this. But by saying this, I am totally going to get them now, I'm sure.

Stop it! You're all making me think I should take my kids in to have 'em whacked out.

You might have trouble finding someone willing to do it "just because"...the conventional wisdom these days is that the tonsil's sole function is to prevent infections from progressing down the throat. Now they say for most kids that many of those sore throats are signs that the tonsils are Working As Intended, and some docs don't think there is much benefit to removing them. Although chronic tonsilloliths would be one reason to consider a tonsillectomy.

Yeah, I should have figured that, Colphax, thanks. But, hey, it's Los Angeles, I'm sure I could find some back-alley tonsillectomist (sp?!).

It's funny, though, I didn't even think of tonsils and how routine it was to have them out when I was small, and what that might mean for my kids, until this thread.

Ironic that I would think about getting their tonsils out, given my uwillingness to snip my boy.
