This could very well end up like the "what car should Dash get" thread. Linger on for YEARS... but... let's kick it off shall we?

So right now i have a sun tattoo on my back, left shoulder. (no homo) Why a sun? I dont know. My buddy and I decided to get a tattoo. I picked that. I liked the cool colors in it. I was 21 at the time.

I need to bad *** it up and, I want something to symbolize or represent the birth of my boy. So right now I'm thinking of putting an asian style dragon in the sun, and having Ethan's name and birthday incorporated into the dragon somehow.

Not this particular dragon necessarily, but along these lines:

Image

So. Dragon. Too cliche and trendy?

I really like that. It reminds me somewhat of a story I read as a kid about a serpent eating the sun...can't remember if it was Aztec or Egyptian mythology. Anyway, it was really cool.
I have yet to meet a boy that hasn't been obsessed with dragons at some point...seems pretty fitting to me.

If you're worried about what other people think of the dragon ( you ask if it's too cliche and trendy ) then just be aware that 90% of people will think yes, too cliche, and not trendy, but dorky. But to be honest, just pick a tattoo that you like, one that can have deep meaning to you, and get an artist to make unique artwork. Shop around and really spend time picking someone with a style you like. A good tattoo artist should be able to draw you a few concept sketches for you to compare around and decide what you want. Remember, this thing is going to be permenant! So do it right, the first time.

That being said, I love dragons.

I have a cool idea for a tattoo, it's a tree, with roots as long as the branches. Meant to show that your roots and internal being are as strong as your external...yin yang type of stuff. I also had the idea of periodically putting symbols along the roots / branches to symbolize different turning points in your life, or things that define you. Great to put on your arm if you're a guy, or on your side if you're a woman.

You should get a tattoo of a butt with a butt-shaped tattoo on your butt.

I would posit that if you aren't already 100% positive of exactly what tattoo you want, that perhaps you aren't quite ready to have something permanently drawn onto your skin?

Maybe a tattoo of you getting a tattoo of the dragon. Then you can decide if you liked how it turned out before you commit to actually getting it.

This, exactly.

Whatever you decide on, you should be certain that you have one or both of the following:
A) Misspell your son's name
B) Have the wrong date of birth

I appreciate the concern but that's kind of like saying "I'm not sure if you're aware but, if you jump in that pool you're going to get wet." ;)

I know conceptually what I want, I'm trying to figure out how best to express it. I dunno, it's just how I process things. I'm not sure how people typically come to the point where they "know 100%". I've known for the past 2 years I want something, just gotta figure out what the best expression of what I want is.

Here's the tattoo I got a couple of weeks ago. This is the next one that I want to get. Maybe around August some time. Need to convince the wife first so I don't get in to too much trouble. :-)

Phe's looking for an artist now for hers. I'm in the process of deciding what I want to do to augment my current tattoo.

Are you against the idea of custom work? How do the portfolio's of the artists you have been looking at strike you? How hard would it be to work with the artist to come up with a custom dragon piece?

Holy Crap! Tolyn's tattoo is just awesome.

Wow that's great Tolyn. Looks killer. How long did that take?

I'm fortunate in that my cousin is a very talented tattoo artist. So I'd probably go with him

Can we see a picture? I was going to recommend wrapping the dragon around the sun, but that'd depend on how it looks right now.

This post is dripping with epic.

I trust the artist's judgment. The artist who did my back and most recent chest runs a comic, game and CTG type shop, so I knew I could relate certain styles of art with her. Also, she had good judgment at being able to visualize how my skin would react to colors, and making designs that complement my particular body.

So really, the piece you want is just part of it - the artist is going to have to make adjustments for things like your skin and shape so find one you have some chemistry with.

And don't get anything in the center of your upper back. If you are at all lean like I am, it's like tattooing beef jerky. Hard to do and will cost you quite a bit of pain. Plus its harder to take care of, but I managed to rig up a thing to apply ointment and wash it. Although ... it is worth it.

The chest was super easy, no breaks, straight through.

That tat took about 2 and a half hours. The guy came to my apartment and did the work while I was sitting on some cushions on the floor. lol.

Dude, that is the only time I have ever seen a living room tattoo and thought it was awesome, even after finding out it was a living room tattoo.

Dash, I like the idea of the dragon curled into or around the sun, but I'm not a big fan of spelling out tattoo meanings for people. It's kind of like - you know why it's there, and anyone close to you will know also; putting the name and date just seems as if you're "giving too much away" if you know what I mean. I guess I'm just a private person that way.

There are a lot of instances of such a thing in myth, for example:
Crocodiles in Africa
Ravens in North America
Giant Sea serpent (Bakunawa) in the Philippines
Dragon in China
Snake (Apep)in Egypt

Ok ...

So, Professor Metal has ink. And let me tell you this ... because I'm dead serious when it comes to ink ...

It's your skin. It's going to be there until you die. And the badassery of the tattoo comes not from the ink or the artist but the **** wearing that ink.

The arm band on my left arm is distinctly composed of things that are "cute" ... and it's still bad *** and gets much respect because it is MY tattoo.
