Okay, so a couple months ago, my wife and I were in a restaurant. There was an Asian family celebrating something there. We were trying to figure out what nationality they were. We were too far away to hear them speak so I couldn't go by language. I saw a Hello Kitty backpack so of course I automatically think Japanese. I'm curious if there are traits amongst various Asian groups that are more prominent in some countries than others. A little bit of Google searching didn't really come up with much which makes me suspect there isn't really anything.

I just figured that the Irish have freckles, red hair, and drunkenness. The Italians have body hair and tomatoes. Do the Japanese have anything besides Hello Kitty?

Myself, I'm mostly a mutt mixed with half Hungarian. I have a decent amount of back-hair to prove the Hungarian part, but the other half is so mixed you can't pigeon-hole me based on other traits.

Yes, I'm incredibly insensitive.

Japanese are a genetic blending of caucasian and asian ethnicities and they have much different facial features then the majority of the continent.

I have two vietnamese brothers and a vietnamese sister. I couldn't explain to you how to tell the difference between someone who is vietnamese and someone who is Korean or Chinese or Japanese or Phillipino, but I usually can.
Its funny that you bring it up though, because I was just thinking about that the other day with a different minority and was thinking to myself that if I ever said it out loud I would be considered a racist.
I was looking out my window and saw a bald black guy walk across the neighbor's yard. (we live in a bad part of town.) The thought crossed my mind that if I was asked to identify him, I probably couldn't.
I think it has something to do with what we are visually exposed to on a daily basis. When everyone shares the same ethnicity you begin to distinguish people by other characteristics and train yourself to see subtle differences as big ones...which explains why every white person to us looks unique. If we were raised in China, I'm sure that every asian person would look different to us and that those differences would be way obvious.

There are differences among the Asian types, I can see them but can never remember which is which. Meanwhile, we who were brought up around mostly white folk can tell the difference between a redhead of German heritage from one of Irish heritage, right? And we can tell a swarthy Italian from a swarthy Mexican. Same thing with Asians... increased exposure makes the differences easier to see, much like the pair of twins who look 'identical' when you first meet them then, as you get to know them, you can't understand how people keep mixing them up.

I worked translating software with a Chinese girl many years ago and we were out for lunch. We didn't have much time, so she called a waiter over, one who was sort of similarly colored to the one who introduced himself to us. He said "I'll got get your waiter for you" and she said "Sorry, you all look alike". A moment of awkward silence and then hystrerical laughter.

Funny, I just saw an article yesterday that suggested why black folk run faster than white folk:

It's all in the limbs

I can generally tell Thais from Japanese, from Koreans, or from various flavors of Chinese. Living in LA, I get exposed to a few different ethnicities just on my way to work. Not that I could sit down and tell someone how to tell those differences, though.

They didn't mention "Korean people play Starcraft" in the interests section. FAIL!

Lydiaa once posted long, long ago that Japanese tend to look more like Surfers. I've always went with that.

Mm.. there was an online quiz sort of thing posted to some iteration of the Glade awhile back where you were given a picture and had to pick Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. I did some snooping and I'm pretty sure it's test #1 on http://alllooksame.com/exam_room.php -- does require a login to take the test, but it's a free sort of login. That or BugMeNot...

I used to think I was getting better but I'm still apparently very bad at this! Curse my rural American upbringing. There are practically no blacks here, even, how do they expect me to tell apart Asians without prominent racial features?! Or.. or so it appears to me for about half of those in test #1. :(

I usually go by the way they dress, as I said, japs were more surfy types and tend to go with more cool gear, jap girls on the other hand are hard to pick out, but they are usually the ones with the wackiest accessories.

Korean guys tend to go for the more mature glammor look, and they pull it off quite well! Korean girls are usually the ones with the most make up and big big big big arse bags that could hold my whole living room.

Chinese guys look like big boys, they try too hard to impress, (think skinny jeans for guys *shivers). They are either the geeky type who live in an internet cafe, the player wannabe with the big diamond earing and skinny jeans, or the sporty type forever with a shirt and bball pants on. Chinese girls either look made up like a doll, or don't care about their appearances much, not too much in between.

Indonesian boys are forever in flip flops, even if they are wearing semi formal attire on top.

Philo boys try too hard to be white, while philo girls are usually the more stuck up than the other asian population.

Viet boys tend to be shorter and usually have this semi gangster wannabe style, viet girls are usually very pretty but tend to be on the shorter side.

Basically I couldn't tell the difference between the different asian cultures if you just gave me a picture of a face, but their general attitude and body language usually gives away hints about their origin. And since you can't be racist to your own race, I'd just like to say Chinese boys (not the abc ones) totally suck on the taste scale when it comes to dressing themselves teehee

All that matters is no matter where in the world you go, there are hot women. That is the most important thing to remember. Except Rolla, Missouri. God have mercy on the poor souls who choose to go there. Or cast them into the inferno for their own foolishness. I care not!

I call bullshit on that. The amount of awesome required for all of that to occur would cause the universe to implode.

Or at the very least would make you John Lennon.

Bullshit or not, the quote has been stored in the archive...its awesomeness will live forever....er, or at least until this board crashes. :)
