Especially when it is 10+ degrees hotter inside the house than it is outside. 97 today outside. about 108 inside the house. Was so hot, I woke up 2 hours early because it was just too hot laying down in my bed. It's going to be 90+ until late next week. Though, I can't say I trust them predicting the temperature 10 days in advance.

Sympathy Raltar, that is one of my pet peeves too. Patronize Libraries, Supermarkets, Bowling Alleys and Movie Theaters, in that order for financial reasons.

The air conditioner is a useful home appliance designed to remove heat and humidity from the air of your home. It was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier in Syracuse, New York.

Can't afford one. Especially since the whole house would have to be gutted to add the vents and such to get the air into all of the rooms in the house. Thank god we are moving soon, though...sadly won't be until after the summer is over.

That sucks, Raltar. Sorry to hear :(

Use it as a good excuse to get out more.

They make units that can sit in a window and cool one room.

We have swamp coolers in two of the rooms...but they don't do jack with the humidity.

WINDOW UNIT ... unless they are somehow illegal in the great state of wherever the hell it is you live that's filled with crazy liberals and liberals that fancy themselves Republicans.

I see.

EDIT:
You mean like they have in some hotel rooms. Or motel. Whatever.

EDIT2:

Hmmm...that might not be a bad thing. We could even take them with us when we move. It's not like they become permanent fixtures when installed. Looking around online, some are as low as $100 at Walmart.

Yup - that's what I'm talking about. They're not awesome, but definitely better than nothing. Especially when the humidity knocks out the swamps. Monsoon season has started here. I'm so glad my house has AC instead of swamp.

When I was growing up, we had an old, old house, with ceilings around 20' high, and no central unit. We had three window unit air conditioners (den, my bedroom, and parents' bedroom. Keeping cool was. a. *****.

And I know you don't just mean temperature-wise.

Also, when you open the windows, open the top portion because hot air rises...

My windows slide from side to side. I think the biggest problem is when my grandfather built this house, he only built windows on the east and south sides of the house. This means when we get a nice breeze in the late afternoon, it doesn't do us any good because the air can't flow all the way through the house. Even with windows open, the breeze could be blowing right at the windows and it seems like nothing gets through.

We're in an un air-conditioned place too, and the upstairs goes over 110 easy. Fortunately the bedrooms are in the basement (half submerged) and it stays a little cooler down there. If we owned the place we'd put AC in, but it's a rental. I'm going to try to talk the owner into a whole-house fan, since even keeping the place the SAME as the outside air would be an improvement. in the meantime we're trying to figure out which window the box AC should go in. How does one install such a thing?

Window units (at least, the ones we used to use) are pretty easy: raise the window, position the unit in the window (it's got ridges that fit against the top and bottom of the window frame), then fold out the accordian-like wings to close the gaps on the sides. Close the window flush to the top of the unit, and voila.

Hmm... my windows aren't double-hung, they're sliders. I'm going to have to figure out how to block the top of the window.

I have something like this:
http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... EEQ8wIwAg#

In my room. And my windows slide side to side. What I did was weatherstrip a piece of glass from Home Depot into the slot formed by the exhaust port. Granted, its a *bit* of a kludge, but from the outside, its not awful. A couple of extra window lock thingies and its just as secure.

Thank goodness I have AC at my apartment. It easily gets to 110+ here every day with humidity in the 50 to 60 percentile range. It sucks enough being out in that heat and on the water for 12 to 14 hours, but if I had to deal with heat once I got home, I'd be absolutely miserable.

I can't imagine not having AC here...I think it would get up to 130+ inside.

The heat wave seems to be mostly over. Instead of waking up to 98+ degree weather, I woke to 84. And the trend should continue into next week. I was still covered in sweat, but it wasn't nearly as oppressive as it has been the past few days.

We can't find any affordable window units that will fit in our windows, which is lame.
