I'm wondering if instead of a bokken I could spring for an iaito and use a real saya with it, that way I can practice sheathing and drawing the blade more accurately and the blade will feel like an actual katana.

I wonder if that site has properly balanced iaito swords, I'd hate to buy a nicely sharpened katana (say what you will, $300 is expensive) and dull it myself for that purpose. Bokken are pretty cheap ($40 bucks) I wonder if I can get a nice working iaito that won't break for around $100?

For this reason, the first time a drew a live blade I broke out in a cold sweat. The thought of seeing my fingers on the ground before feeling them get severed bothered me more than a little.

The blade looks nice. The cutting demos are fun, too (not the guy with the waterbottles. ick). If you want to do good cutting practice, pick up some rolled mats. They are better for the blade than fruit, water, etc.

Nifty.

Let me give you the following recommendations, though -

If you are serious about learning to use the Katana, you should find a qualified instructor. They are rare. If you go to swordforum.com, you can find some there. Take your time.

A good instructor will start you with a bokken. Eventually, after much time and effort, they may or may not let you use an unsharpened sword, and then eventually put a real blade in your hand. It's a time consuming process, but I suggest that if you are serious about the sword you will take the necessary time.

Now, if you just want to use your cool sword to cut the **** out of inanimate objects, have at. Don't cut yourself and mind your pets. It's easier to do than you might imagine. :P More power to ya, have at.

Taking bets on how long it will be before Nev causes himself serious injury.

Also to what body part he injures/removes.

Be aware that technology is progressing to the point where they can fabricate difficult to detect temper lines on a blade. That blade is hella expensive, which is not necessarily unwarranted. Good swords cost a ton of cash, especially if they are hand crafted.

So, if you ever get to the point where you might lay out the cash for something like this, please do a lot of research on the sword smith.

It could happen. It's best not to do drawing cuts unless you have trained a great deal. Years, really. Cutting from an unsheathed position is a lot less likely to harm you. You still very seriously need to mind your ****, though.

For that kind of money you could get half of a Präzisionsscharfschützengewehr 1.

All kinds of reproductions are available out there. I've seen friends make their own, but of course the steel is western and not folded 1000 times.

A high quality Katana and Wakazashi Daisho will set you back somewhere around the price of a new car. Depending on the quality and history thereof, the range is almost as great as the prices of new cars. Admittedly, you are looking at a legendary centuries old Daisho by the time you get to Ferraris.

However, if you want a working sword to practice with and learn the craft, what Nevandal is buying will work just fine. Me, I wouldn't want to practice with a $20k Katana until I'd practiced with a few hundred dollar one for at least a few years.

Don't cut off your thumb unsheathing it...

This reminds me of these guys selling Japanese knives at the BX the other week. They were at their table with head bands and some sort of knife maker... garb. Every time I looked at them I couldn't help but smirk at the joke in my head. That I couldn't count the number of time I was trying to eat a steak and wished that 'if only I had some Hanzo steel!'

Also, beware of any bargain bin Cursed Swords that give you untold power at the expense of your soul. You'll have to go through a serious trial to return it and may have to get the blessing of the tanuki princess and find a kitsune ramenya. Seriously, you don't want to have to put up with that ****. You might want to consider not doing it at all. Eventually some weird dudes with bees in their back will attack you and I hope you like ninjas. You'll be seeing a lot of them.

+1 on Colphax's comments

Real live blades are not toys. And cutting through things in a safe manner takes practice and skill. Any reputable sword school will not let you use a live blade for probably 2-3 years. This is not because they are elitist assholes, it's because it takes that long to learn how to be safe with one.

And even then you can have a brain fart and hurt yourself. I have a video of a 9th degree blackbelt of a sword art (I forget which exact one right now, maybe Iaido) cutting off his own thumb doing a form because he rushed the initial draw of the sword from the sia too quickly.
