UPDATE: Problem Solved...it was the damn password.

it keeps saying "unable to obtain ip address" and it gets stuck on "acquiring network address"


i've tried everything....3 or more times. i've looked through every fathomable option and menu in both the laptop's wireless configuration and the router

the laptop connects to other wireless networks.
other wireless devices can connect to the router.

i think i might be losing my sanity...

Wireless is great when it works but it's a freakin' nightmare when it doesn't.

XP, the same OS I used on my computer for 5 years and understand well and have gotten wireless connections to work on just fine without issues, lol.

What's weird is this laptop worked fine with the same configuration before, and nothing has changed. The laptop went off to college with my sister and she connected to their wireless network there, and the wireless at her house there as well. Then she came back, and now it doesn't connect to this wireless network at OUR home, even though it worked before.

I just don't get it, haha...

have you gone to a command prompt and run ipconfig release all and ipconfig renew all?

I would try these (if you have not already):

/release all : Sends a DHCPRELEASE message to the DHCP server to release the current DHCP configuration and discard the IP address configuration for either all adapters (if an adapter is not specified) or for a specific adapter if the Adapter parameter is included. This parameter disables TCP/IP for adapters configured to obtain an IP address automatically. To specify an adapter name, type the adapter name that appears when you use ipconfig without parameters.

/flushdns : Flushes and resets the contents of the DNS client resolver cache. During DNS troubleshooting, you can use this procedure to discard negative cache entries from the cache, as well as any other entries that have been added dynamically.

/renew all : Renews DHCP configuration for all adapters (if an adapter is not specified) or for a specific adapter if the Adapter parameter is included. This parameter is available only on computers with adapters that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically. To specify an adapter name, type the adapter name that appears when you use ipconfig without parameters.

PS- I only asked the OS because if you said MAC OS (any version) my response would have been: sorry homie, I got nothin'

Is the laptop using 802.11b?

I have all sorts of trouble with older wireless stuff on my newer equipment. You might try hooking it up hardwire to eliminate everything but the wireless.

At that point, if you're sure you are using the same encryption protocol, I can only suggest reinstalling the drivers.

Did you hit the little button on the laptop that turns off the wireless?

OK I tried the ipconfig and both options give me back this message:

"The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation."


ipconfig /flushdns gave me "Successfullly flushed the DNS Resolver Cache." but that didn't fix the problem.


The wireless is on (i tried hitting the button at the top of the keyboard to turn it off and then back on again)

Ahhhh crap.

You know why I couldn't find the problem?

It was the password.

It's done this before, after a while the password sometimes just does not work and I have to change it.

I hate that!!! I type it in exactly, case sensitive on multiple computers and it works, but it didn't work on this one. What the hell.

Oh well...it works now. lol
