Anyone heard of the SODIS method? http://www.sodis.ch/index_EN

Apparently, some people are claiming that if you put water in a plastic or glass bottle and set it out in the sun for 6 hours, its purified?
I've taken survival courses where we dug a pit and either urinated into it or poured dirty water into it, put a cup in the middle of the hole, covered it with plastic, and allowed the moisture to be filtered through the dirt/sand and then evaporated onto the plastic and into the cup as a way of purifying water if you can't boil it or don't have any tablets or other filtration device....

But setting water in a bottle in the sun for 6 hours? Wouldn't that case bacteria and stuff to multiply, not kill it?

It *should*. You have to heat something up to a certain temp to kill bacteria. That's...odd.

It makes use of UV radiation, oxygen free radicals and hydrogen peroxides to deactivate the organisms. The organisms will return to virulence if left in a dark place.

I dunno, sounds dubious but eh.

On a different note, I am *seriously* considering using this as my avatar:

Its from their PDF

...a health-impact study conducted by the Basel-based Swiss Tropical Institute and the University of California-Berkeley released this week found that the rate of illnesses such as severe diarrhoea have not dropped in Bolivia, where seven test communities and four control groups have been trying the system for a year.

The study concludes that health officials should hold off on promoting the method until more research can be done to find out why the system works in the lab but not in practice.

UV disinfection is a very good method for treating drinking water. That's where the idea is coming from. It's what is used in Steri-pen water purifiers.

It's claims are pretty impressive. Giardia and Cryptosporidium?

How come I am just now hearing about this? And why am I having a hard time believing that it works? Wouldn't this count as a revolutionary kind of thing? I mean....just think of the effect this could have on 3rd world countries.

I'm skeptical.

Why haven't you heard of it before? Probably because you don't work in the drinking water industry, or focus your attention on cheap solutions to problems of water and food in developing countries. (I'm not saying this to be critical, there's really no reason you should.)

Why haven't solar stoves made more of an impact in Sudan? I've heard of them, and how a Peace Corps student or something from MIT developed these things that cost about $10 a piece and save the women the hassle and danger of going farther and farther afield every day for firewood. But that was, what a couple of years ago? I'd expect every Sudanese housewife living in a Darfur refugee camp to have one by now. But, really, after the initial blip of attention, haven't heard a thing about it. If I look it up, I can see that the program has made a difference. But, you get the idea - we just don't have the attention span for this kind of thing, especially if it's cheap and effective, and no one really stands to gain (except for the people it's helping).

LK -

UV radiation can kill cells at low temperatures - hence sunburn.

However, there are lots of organisms that have evolved mechanisms for resisting UV damage (otherwise, there would not be any bacteria on the surface of lakes and oceans longer than 6 hours).

I believe protozoa, in particular, will be harder to kill with this method.

Overall, it's not a good idea. First, there could be some resistance. Second, the amount of UV radiation changes drastically throughout the year, throughout the day, and by region. I think this method, as a blanket solution, will get a lot of people sick.

Well that plus the whole chemicals leaching into the water from the bottle:

I hope this works for the people that need it, but I too am extremely skeptical.

Glass blocks most of UV.

Sort of.
Long waves pass through (350+nm) about 90% while shorter waves (300+ nm) are blocked about 90%.
