The Astronaut's Wife!

I may cut you some slack, Arathain, for the post-Tim Burton Johnny Depp. But he really has had a good career outside of that.

For once Arathain and I mostly agree.

I think I'm not quite as absolute about it, but overall I concur re: Johnny Depp's one-character career.

There are certainly roles that Johnny Depp is drawn to because he likes to and has a talent for playing the weird, off-beat. But you can't look at me and tell me that the Ninth Gate is the same character as Pirates of the Caribbean, or even that Fear and Loathing and Willy Wonka share a character.

This, this this! I don't see how anyone can see Johnny Depp as a one character kinda guy...I think he's very versatile in the characters that he portrays.

Tell me your three favorite roles he's been in, then list your opinion of the 3 hallmark "character traits" of those roles.

Captain Jack Sparrow--quirky, offbeat, funny

Raoul Duke--bizarre, funny, enigmatic

Dean Corso---.........

I guess you have a point, DFK, its that boldly unique/bizarre/humorous/enigmatic/devil-may-care kind of character. Huh.

But I totally win on the fact that Johnny Depp is way sexier than Tom Cruise any day. I'm not budging on that one.

I think that Tom Cruise is still in the top 1% of coolness. It's hard to beat Johnny Depp.

Now, he does have some characters that don't fit that mold. More than Tom Cruise does that don't fit the Tom Cruise mold. But not a lot.

There are very few modern actors who can actually disappear into a role, and in my opinion they're all "classically" trained, such as the Lithgow's and Gary Oldmans of the world.

Is that from "Blow" ?

I thought "Blow" was one of my favorite Depp movies.

What's eating Gilbert Grape is pretty good, too. Oh, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas of course.

Yes, he has some that are different, but these are not that common. I think he's demonstrated he can do it if required. But, like I said, he needs to step the hell away from Tim Burton.
