Thanks for the tips. That's quite helpful.

The other non-painting related query I have is "how should I choose what to purchase first?" I have about 500 points of orks and SMs. I'm going for orks, but what's a solid base for my army? I've been watching them play and I have the general idea of the rules, but I don't have anything to play with myself yet. I'm not sure what the most tactically/financially sound way to go is.

For orks, it's hard to go wrong purchasing boyz to expand your army after a certain point. At 500, though, you're probably better off looking to diversify into some of your other slots instead; elites, fast attack, heavy support, etc.

So I'd look at a few units, and pick out what appeals to you. At this point, choosing any of them is likely to be fine; an Ork army ends up being "fun stuff + boyz", and I'm assuming you've got the "+ boyz" part started at 500 points. Once you've made a choice or two on the "fun stuff" bit, then you'll have to worry a bit more about synergy and whatnot when making additional fun stuff choices.

Some common directions include: a massive foot-slogging army (a Green Tide), a fast, vehicular-centric army with transports, bikes, warbuggies, etc. (Speed Freakz), a small model-count army focussing on Deff Dreadz and Killa Kans (I think there's a slang name for this one, too, but I don't remember it)...

Did you get the starter set for 40k? That produces around that many points.

The reason I ask is when you say "I have the general idea of the rules, but I don't have anything to play with myself yet" it makes me a bit confused as to whether you have the Base Rule Book or the Codex.

If you don't have both of those, then beg, borrow, steal, or EBay them. Required to play, basically.

Then, think long and hard about what type of ork army you want to field. Green tide, with a bajillion models? Fun, moderately competitive, but costly and takes forever to paint. Biker horde? Fast, fun, used to be competitive with Nob bikers, but again costly. A mix? Then just add as you see fit, and evolve your army slowly over time rather than buying a bunch of **** at once.

One of the keys to Orks though, is that you really need a Nob in every mob of Boyz to be effective, and that Nob needs to have a Powerklaw. Beyond that, there are no true "rules" to making an Ork army.

Dark Angels are probably the hardest Space Marines to paint "right"; by which I mean, Dark Angels are the Space Marines with the longest and most stories history so there are different color schemes for different models based on the Power Armor they are wearing. This applies to even Tactical Sergeants with Veteran Honors or Terminator Honors.

Are they now? Did the First Chapter finally say screw it and go to the Dark Side en masse? I'm definitely behind on my codices at the moment.

Also, Crim ... Emo? Really? I mean, it's not like they have a Glittery, Sparkly, Halo Wearing, Wings on His Jump Pack Vampire Captain like the ... Blood Angels ...

Or a whole bunch of pseudo-Norse werewolves ...

You forgot "moaning about their fated doom," Khross. "Glittery, sparkly, halo-wearing, wings on his jump pack vampire Captain moaning about his imminent doom."

I'd actually like the Blood Angels if they didn't play up the glittery bit as much. Make them unpredictable, untrusted monsters who are barely tolerated because they're useful and deadly instead of cranking up the persecution complex and moan "oh, we're perfect and persecuted just because we're all on the road to crazy-town with our engines red-lined!"

WTF are you talking about? "We forgot our chapter history ... cause something bad happened we're not talking about ..." ... That's not Emo? I mean seriously ...

My theory after brief consideration is that Space Marine fluff/rules support is directly proportional to their emo-ness.

I mean, ****. Look for special White Scars or Imp Fists rules. There aren't any; they get a character in the Smurf codex, and that's it. And it's tough to peg them as emo.

The test will be to pick up the newest Imperial Armor book and see if the fluff bits in it increase the Raven Guard emo quotient since they add some Raven Guard support.

No, but apparently one of the novels sort of disclosed that Johnson's hesitation to see the victor basically makes him chaotic, and the Fallen are the true believers.

It's complex to say the least. And the Chaos issue the Dark Angels faced had nothing to do with Horus inasmuch as what happened was contained to Caliban and isolated from the Heresy. But, I have almost finished my Fallen Army.

Khross, how do you keep up with Warhammer fluff, comic books, WoW and everything else? Do you not sleep?

After not being lazy, I looked up some forums with people posting basic strategies, so I think that'll help me decide some basic stuff.

I finally made my decision. I have the Assault on Black Reach guys. So I have a warboss, 5 nobs, 20 boyz and 3 defcoptas.

After some meditations, I decided on more boyz, cause they like company. I wish I had gotten the trukk, but I'll hold off on that or now. A weirdboy, which I will probably always upgrade to a warphead. I considered Old Zogwort, because turning people's independent characters into squigs appealed to me, but with a 50/50 chance of it getting blocked I didn't think he was worth the points. I did take some kommandos w/ Boss Snikrot though. I took a Deff Dread, because I wanted a looted tank, but couldn't find one. And I took a some tankbustas. I think that should get me to 1000 points and I'll see how it goes from there.

I still need to purchase some paint though.

*** also, I feel really dumb, because it just occurred to me to check the SA Forums for wargaming and they have a huge amount of info.

Not enough people play with weirdboyz. I find them utterly entertaining.

DFK! and I like the guys over at 40kforums. DakkaDakka guys know their stuff, too, but the attitude over there is a lot more of a downer.

If you want to be competition, you don't do weirdboyz. If you don't want to be competitive, do whatever you want.

Tankbustas are in comp. lists, Snikrot sometimes is.

Trukks v. not-trukks can go either way.

How many boyz did you get? If they're on foot they need to be full-sized mobs, with a Nob in each.

I think I need more boyz. I like something I read "boyz before toyz."

Considering the group, they do do tournaments occasionally... I'd like to be competitive, but wouldn't mind playing around with more off the wall set ups either. For more competitive stuff, It looks like I should have gotten 9 Kans and went with Big Meks. The warboss came with AoBR, so I just happened to have him, but apparently the kustom force field of BMs is too good to pass up. I had the 3 def koptas and they look solid with twin rokkits and a buzzsaw. The painboyz also look solid with some nobz iirc.

I'm too new to figure out the best math for everything myself at the moment, but taking advice is a good step until I'm more familiar with the rules and matchups. I can see totally getting into tweaking out a good army, but a less serious army will be fun as well. If I get better and there was a new guy, why would I want to destroy his spirits? The guys here seem pretty cool about helping new folks learn the game actually.

I liked snikrot, because it seemed like kommandos looked like they would be good for harassment, and adding snik didn't seem like a whole lot of points. He has some decent abilities. If nothing else he seems like fun. :ugeek:

Basically, the Kustom Force Field is way more reliable than the super random weirdboy/warphead. Random performance is an uphill battle in competition. But it can be a lot of fun if you're just along for the ride.

If I ever get around to doing an Ork list, it'll be a weirdboy (or warphead, not sure how the points will work out) and a Shokk Attack Gun, because honestly, those are about my two favorite units in the army. =P

with a warphed, you can reroll the dice, so you have better chances of doing someting useful. I don't think I'd use a weirdboy and not upgrade. Then again, if I were having fun with weirdboyz, I'd make one Old Zotgut as well and try to turn things into squigs.
