Yay! Birdies! :D

I have had several birds over the past few years and right now I have a female parakeet.

After clipping her wings, I've gotten her to step up onto my finger and now she will sit on my shoulder for hours at a time. (Yesterday, I fell asleep and woke up with no less than 15 tiny turds on my left boob where the bird was sitting. Hahahahaha!)

I'm more familiar with cockatiel behavior, so what's puzzling me right now about this bird is:

1) She exhibits no curiosity whatsoever. (she sat on my boob for an hour while I took a nap and didn't move.) How do I get her to play?
2) I have heard very limited sound from her. Occasionally she will coo and softly warble at night, but rarely. She "fusses" once or twice a day (I can't really explain how that sounds but its like a screech followed by a few clicks and its loud) but I'm not really sure why.

Any thoughts?

Mourning Doves are damn fast, and with a good tail wind, can hit 50+ MPH.

Under those conditions, hitting them is quite a bit more difficult, reducing your effective range. At that speed, you to lead them a fair amount, and the dove's natural defensive mechanism is to make sudden flares to avoid diving predators. Even if you have the right lead, a sudden flare will put the bird well outside your spread.

Being a dark meat, my preferred method for cooking the birds is to place the meat into a 2" deep pan, and cover liberally with salsa.

My parents tend to use cream of mushroom soup instead of salsa, which isn't bad, but I don't like the flavor of mushrooms, so biting into the small chunks of fungus ruins the otherwise enjoyable flavor.

Bird meat and salsa? That doesn't sound very tasty at all.
I would think more of a cream-based sauce or a gravy.

Dove is a very lean, dark meat, and the extra water from the salsa (even though I like hot food, I use a mild salsa so it only compliments the flavor of the meat, not overpowers it), keep it very moist while imparting some of the seasoning flavor to the meat.

I personally dislike the use of most gravies and heavy sauces, which are more about disguising the flavor of the food. Not always the case of course, but most people use them because they prefer the flavor of the gravy/sauce to the actual food... i.e. using A1 or something else on a steak.

I like birds with nice legs and sexy butts. It also helps if they have a good sense of humor and laugh easily at my stupid jokes. ;)

Overall, while some of their music is pretty good, I find The Byrds to be a bit too folksy for my taste.

Ladas, have you tried stuffing the dove with mandarin oranges and baking it? That works really well for me when I roast a chicken...keeps it nice and moist.
Arafys: meese, camels, birds...any species will do, right? :D

Let's talk about birds, baby;
Lets talk about chirps and tweets.
Let's talk about all the swallows
And the finches that may be
Let's talk about birds,
Lets talk about birds!

Some people when they clean a dove just pull the breast meat off the body and discard the rest, as there is almost no meat located on other parts of the body, other the legs. I tend to keep both the breast meat and the legs (the leg meat has a sweeter flavor in my opinion), but there isn't really a means to "stuff" the bird. Plus, I dislike orange, or any citrus, flavored meat, and with a bird that small, even though the body cavity could only hold a couple slices of orange, the flavor would permeate the meat. The exception being to soak shark steaks in a diluted lemon juice, but this is for practical reasons and less for flavor, as I think BBQ the steaks.

I find a cattle prod highly effective. Except on my Norwegian Blue --they stun easily.

And are prone to fits of depression when separated from their native habitat.

They're quite strong though. You practically have to nail them down to keep them from bending the bars of their cage.
