10 years ago I remember pulling out the classified ads and there being columns of jobs to apply for. Today, there were exactly 8 jobs, which is one or two more than usual. There are 10 jobs in the paper for my hometown, 30 minutes away. Most of these jobs are for nurses, mechanics, or truck drivers.
I checked the job listings for the university, and for the Support Staff (non-degree specific employment opportunities) there were....5 jobs listings. Five. Thats. It.

Yeah, in the IT field in StL at the moment, things are going fairly strong but folks are posting the openings on-line, not in the newspapers. I have no idea how the other industries are doing.

Hard copy Mr. Sky. In this case the hard copy is not meant as documentation for the files but as a summary of the day's news with advertisements and features (not bugs).

You can still find them in many places. For you, first try this link http://www.tennessean.com/ then go to your local market and ask if they have any copies of the Tennesseean. amazingly, when you compare the hard copy and the on-line copy you will find many differences and each format will have its distinct advantages.

One of the major advantages to the hard copy is to line LadyKate's bird cage, of course it stops being hard copy and becomes trash at that point. You can also house train puppies. Please do not try to house train Pheona, she will have to hurt you if you do.

I'd like to point out the relatively large number of Health Care positions, see Kirra, jobs here. Overall, way fewer than there used to be, the help wanted section would go on for 20 odd pages with each page having a hundred jobs or more.

Newspaper circulation is much lower than it was 10 years ago, and things like ebay, craigslist, and too-numerous-to-count job search sites have made the classifieds pretty much obsolete.

So are you saying the marked decrease of job listings in the local classified ads are due to them being listed in other venues and not a drastic drop in employment opportunities?
I thought craigslist was a pretty raunchy site to go to find someone to pay for sex....I never hear of it being used for anything reputable. And jobs listed on eBay? I've only been out of the workforce since February....am I already out of the loop that much??? Surely not...

Decreases in job opportunities due to the economy are certainly part of the reduced listing in the papers. However, I don't think you can attribute all the decrease to the economy. Well before things went south, there were multiple online venues for posting and recruiting, other than Ebay or Craiglist. Things like Monster, the local venue (around here one is called UpStateJobs.com), etc, that provide much cheaper means of posting jobs.

From my industry, and I'm sure others, we have professional groups/publications that are much more value for getting qualified people than random entries in a local paper.

Even the major manufacturers here, such as BMW, Bosch, and Michelin rely less on the paper and instead send out press releases to the local radio/TV stations about "job fairs" when they have openings.

Nope, I'm not saying that at all...


I'm saying that the value of a newspapers classified ad is near zero because there are cheaper, better performing alternatives, due mainly to the fact that newspapers circulation had dropped so significantly because of things like ebay, craigslist, and other oniline tools, that have displaced many of the things that made newspapers valuable.

Edit: Please don't construe what I'm saying to mean that there isn't an unemployment problem. There obviously is. I'm just saying that you shouldn't use the lack of job postings in your local newspaper as a sole indicator.

Edit2: Craigslist is in the news for scummy things, but it can be, if used safely, a great tool for buying/selling/trading/bartering, and yes, even finding and posting of jobs. I've bought and sold several guitars using craigslist with no scummy stuff happening at all. You just have to be very careful.

I've gotten every single one of my well-paying jobs through Craigslist. There's a reason it's one of the top 40 (top 10 in the US) most-visited websites on the Internet.

Aethien, the NorthMississippi one would count for me but when I check they rarely have anything in our area...mostly just Memphis suburbs and we're about 3 hours away from there.

Sorry for my second semi-necro today, just realized that I never came back to this thread.

Maybe that could be your job, LK - starting up a Craigslist for your town?

And, I went to find the classifieds in the LA Times recently. Had some trouble wading through all the car ads, business announcements, those kinds of things. As far as I can tell, there were 25 job listings. Twenty-five, in a newspaper with a circulation of close to 1 million, in a metro area of 4-5 million people (kind of just guessing, not including Orange County). (Actually, I just checked; daily circulation is about 725k, and only on Sundays do they reach a million these days. Wow.)
