Quote:
Disney just announced a HUGE surprise announcement at Comic-Con: Guillermo del Toro is directed a reboot of The Haunted Mansion. After the Tron Legacy panel, which just plain kicked ***, moderator Patton Oswalt asked audiences what Disney franchise they'd want to see rebooted. Then they rolled a brief teaser logo for The Haunted Mansion and introduced del Toro to the stage. They are making it live-action, and in 3D, and will be making the mansion the scariest place on earth. "If you take the children, they will scream," del Toro said. It's one his favorite experiences and he's excited to bring it to the big screen again.

Del Toro, who was there to give his brief take on what he'll be doing with The Haunted Mansion, said that they're staying true to the art and aesthetic of the original ride that the Disney Imagineers created. They are not making a comedy and Eddie Murphy definitely won't be back. He also says that they're going to make it scary and fun, at the same time. "But the scary will be scary," del Toro promised. And for hardcore fans of the ride, the mythology is going to be created around the "Hat Box Ghost." who is returning. The original Haunted Mansion ride opened at Disneyland in 1969 and has been updated and expanded over the years.

Hmmmm...it could be good, but it is still a Disney movie.

Aside from PotC, I haven't seen anything good put out by Disney that wasn't an animated movie.

"The Straight Story" was an incredible movie, and it technically counts as a Disney film (directed by David Lynch).

Quick non-comprehensive list of Disney live-action films that didn't completely suck--Passable to good for their target audience:

Prince of Persia
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
Race to Witch Mountain
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Bridge to Terabithia
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
National Treasure
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
The Rookie
The Princess Diaries
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Flight of the Navigator
Tron
Dragonslayer

Not all of those are great, by any means, though some were. And there are dozens I haven't seen or don't remember in the same time frame.

I hope it's actually creepy. Like, classic Disney creepy. Ever seen Disney's adaption of "Something Wicked This Way Comes"? Back in the day, Disney put out some messed-up stuff. And I loved it.

From Blastr.com:

Quote:
Remember that Haunted Mansion movie? The one with Eddie Murphy? If you're one of the few who saw it—forget it. Because Guillermo del Toro took the stage near the end of the Tron: Legacy panel at the San Diego Comic-Con to announce that he'd be co-writing and producing (and possibly directing!) a NEW Haunted Mansion film based on the Disney theme-park attraction.

For the director, who first experienced the ride when he was 3 years old, it's not just a ride: It's emotionally therapeutic. In an interview with Heat Vision, he said, "When I'm depressed or when I have a problem, I ride the Haunted Mansion ride to clear my head." And he's no passing fan, either. Del Toro has an entire room in his house devoted to Haunted Mansion memorabilia, containing secret bookcases, wallpaper from the original ride and original art.

In late May, Del Toro passed on directing The Hobbit due to ongoing production delays. When asked why, he said, "Part of the reason I had to get back is that I had projects pending. There were other obligations that were clashing." But why Disney, traditionally the home of princesses and fairies? "[Walt] Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy," said del Toro.

And as we said up top, if you're worried about del Toro's Mansion having a connection to the 2003 Eddie Murphy movie of the same name ... stop. Del Toro said he's not returning any of Eddie Murphy's calls. "It's going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it's definitely going to be scary," said del Toro.
