I'm calling it based on the costumes alone:

This movie will suck.

The costumes...... look like some bad, plastic, 80s movie costume. I.... I was hoping this wouldn't be the case.

My only hope is that the movie is good enough that the silly costumes can be overlooked. Like in The Matrix.

Post production will do wonders.

I don't think it looks that bad. You guys are missing the best part of the picture though. Look at the characters...there is a feeling I get from it, that I like.

I just wish they kind of went with more an Ultimates take on it. I wanted the whole "Is he really Thor, or just some crazy guy?" I wanted a Superhero Fisher King. That ship has certainly sailed.

Oh well. We'll see how it goes.

The costumes are kind of crap, but Odin has rarely looked actually cool, Thor hasn't always looked cool, and my biggest gripe is Loki.

Loki has always been kind of androgynous and impish.

Spoiler:

Slicking his hair? Bad. Should be either the crazy curved horn helmet or like that

Looking at that picture of the armour, it immediately reminded my of that old Flash Gordon movie. Didn't the Hawkmen have armour just like that?

Bad costumes doesn't automatically mean bad movie. It just means they have bad costumes. I'm still excited to see this movie.

Great concept art. Why can't these just be animated, and in such a fashion?

As for the real-life pictures, here's a new one of Hemsworth as Thor. Holy ****, dude got huge.

Good. I figured he'd put on some muscle mass for the role, and I am glad he did. That is probably my favorite movie shot I've seen so far. It far and away destroys all of the others (though I do like Odin's expression).

Doesn't he need to be wearing his gloves and girdle to actually use the hammer?

Fail

Nope, not in the comic. It is his virtue that allows him to use the hammer. It is the reason Steve Rogers can lift it as well.

Kind of hard to do with the way they established Mjollnir at the end of Iron Man 2.

The hammer-crater kind of shoots down the crazy guy theory, IMO.

Beta Ray Bill's got his own hammer. But yeah, I think he can lift Mjollner, too.

He was given his own hammer after the fact I believe...if I still had my comics I could dig it out to find out.

This is reassuring. Sounds promising.

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/07/thor/

Quote:
SAN DIEGO — Any doubts about Thor, the upcoming movie based on the Norse god comic book character, got seriously hammered Saturday when Marvel Studios showed off a ballsy new trailer at Comic-Con International.

The filmmakers set the movie in two distinctively different worlds. In the desert of the American Southwest, a banished Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is taken for a crazy homeless guy. In his homeland, the golden realm of Asgard, the thunder god tangles with his dysfunctional royal family.

In both settings, the bulked-up Hemsworth reads like the real deal: a hero on a journey. Whether he’s brawling or swinging his mighty hammer Mjolnir, the action looks convincing. And while a leaked image of The Destroyer failed to impress, rest assured that the appearance of the enchanted suit of armor at the end of the trailer makes for a blazing big-screen moment.

The trailer, shown in 3-D at Comic-Con, blows away any fears aroused by an early publicity still of Thor’s Asgardian family. Director Kenneth Branagh, best known for his cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare’s work, has captured on film an Asgard of sweeping scale. As with Avatar, stills from the movie look a little on the cheesy side, but the lush moving images prove impressive.

And then there’s the acting: Anthony Hopkins, who plays Thor’s father Odin, brings enough power to the role — at least in the trailer — to salve the harsh memory of that weird golden eye patch and crazy grin.

Well, here's hoping.

Kenneth Brannagh was born on December 10th, and as Raell knows, really cool people were born on that day. So this may work out well.

I'm offended. I think Thor shouldn't be constrained to only represent Norse mythological ideals, but should be representative of the great stories of the broader, multicultural mythologies of the world.
