A dachshund nearly did that to me when I was a child. Required stitches to my lower lip; she split it into three parts. Happily, it didn't color my feelings for dogs, and it healed well so the scar is only about 1/3 inch now.

In general, small dogs are more vicious than larger dogs due to a need to assert themselves as a protective mechanism. A little dog needs to show it's a danger in order to be considered such, a larger dog is automatically considered as such, and does not need such overt displays of aggression.

Second point - and I'm going to be more honest about this than anyone else wants to be - nobody wants to actually ban pit bulls because they're pit bulls, they want to ban them because they are "nigger dogs." That statement is not limited in scope to the Glade, but rather a blanket statement about banning a particular breed of dog. We're being racist against a breed of dog because of the color of its owner's skin, or more accurately, because of the behavior and attitude of the owner. Now, because of our modern sensibilities we can't just come out and say we want to keep niggers from going out and getting dogs, so we think it's a good idea to just ban the breed instead. The problem here is that if we ban a breed of dog, then the ignorant thugs will just pick a different breed of dog to put in dogfighting rings.

No, what we really want is to ban ignorant thug dogs. It's got nothing to do with black people; it's got to do with people's state of being appalled at dogs ripping each other to pieces, not to mention the occasional killing of somene else's dog, horse, or child by aggressive thug dogs. It may seem like Blacks are getting excessive attention in this regard, but that's really a matter of Michael Vick being a poster boy for this asshattery and happening to be black.

The fact is that it is true that any breed can be vicious if it is raised that way. It is definitely true that a child has little chance of fending off a vicious dog of any breed.

However, if you make a daschund vicious and a pit bull vicious and put them in a dog fit, the daschund is not going to win and probably is not going to survive. In fact, a viscious German Shephard would be hard-pressed to win. Pit Bulls (meaning , primarily, bull terriers) have significant phsyical advantages that RD discussed already. A viscious pit bull is a lot more dangerous than a viscious dog of most other breeds; that's why they're chosen so often for dog fighting. If they didn't have a reputation for winning, the bad guys wouldn't want them.

As to the wolverine.. bears avoid them because there's no point in attacking a critter like that when there's a lot less chance of injury from other prey.

I read your post a few times and I'm not seeing a distinction between your point and Coro's. If the Pitbull gets banned, another dog will take its place as the popular thug fighting dog. Maybe you take issue with his wording, but it seems to me you're both saying the same thing.

I believe DE is taking issue with the implication this is racially motivated effort to ban those dogs.

I'm not advocating banning pit bulls; I'm pointing out that wanting to ban pit bulls has nothing to do with them being a "Black Dog", except insofar as a prominent black football player has made himself the poster boy for such dogs.

Obviously a new breed will take their place, such as Rottweilers. It will take their place amongst ignorant dog-fighting thugs regardless of race.

Like I said, don't get too stuck on the wording Coro decided to go with. You're focusing on the wrong part.

But what about a pit bull vs. a pit bull's weight in weiner dogs?

You're wrong. I oppose big breeds in populated areas for several reasons.

The statement "there are no bad dogs, there are just bad owners" is absolutely true, but there are a variety of reasons an owner can be considered bad.

Big dogs shouldn't be kept if you don't have the training to raise them, the money to care for them appropriately, enough space for them to exercise in and the fences or whatever to prevent them from trespassing on others property. If you miss just one of those conditions and you still have even a small dog, you're a bad owner.

I'd ban any dog over 25 lbs. within city limits. I'd also ban horses, cattle, any animal over 25 lbs. Too few people would be able to meet the strict criteria I'd set that checking for the appropriate conditions would be problematic.

I'd say the difference between "Nigger" and "behavior of the owner" is far more than just semantics.

I say you focus too much on the words, and not his intent. At least we agree on that.

I'm not interested in an argument, though. Simply pointing out that I think you're both actually in agreement, because I'm reading Coro's post in a different way.

I don't think this is the case. His entire post except for that one fragment focuses on the supposed racial aspect of this.

On the other hand, you're right that we agree they'd just use different dogs.

My wife and I are saving up and looking at breeders for our first dog. Me I want a Bernese Mountain dog, she wants a St Bernard (a breed she has raised before). I know its a generalization but both breeds seems to have a good calm temperament (Cujo not withstanding). Frankly I would love a big lazy dog who is done walks after two blocks.

My wife's old St Bernard back in Thailand was over 100kg. Tropical weather and a fat hairy drooling dog...great combo :)

I have my heart set on a Bernese but I could go with a English Mastiff. Our primary concern is something that is good and gentle with kids.

My sister's mastiff is something like 5 times that weight. He's an awesome dog, super gentle, and the most intimidating thing about him is the inevitable drop-tackle-lick-your-face move he pulls.

25lbs...I think there are a few house cats that break that limit. As with all animals its the owners responsibility.

Got to break them of that when they are young, before it knocks down an old person :). One of my neighbors had Irish Wolf hounds, great except when something small and fury darts by, then they want to chase after it.

My brothers pit was a great dog too and wouldn't have hurt a soul, but he wouldn't stay in the yard even with a 6' chain fence. Got loose several times and my brother had to pay big bucks in court a couple of times.

I'd love it if the gov could make exceptions to the rules it makes for those they don't have problems with, but too many folks need babysitters to let them watch themselves.
