I really don't like my Humanities prof. He's hell-bent on teaching us how to write a "real academic paper." I can appreciate that. His instructions for the first paper were to answer 4 questions about Aristotle's theories of art in the book Poetics. I received a C+ on this paper. He said in class to e-mail him if we have problems. I had problems understanding his third question. I e-mailed him about it and he didn't respond to my e-mail until the night before it was due. I didn't have enough time to properly revise the answer to that question into its own paragraph like he wanted so my answer was interspersed throughout the paragraphs where I answered his second question. Admittedly, this is mostly my fault because I could have e-mailed sooner but it took him 3 days to respond and we only have a week to write it.

He also marked my paper down because it had an introduction paragraph. His instructions didn't state to not have an introduction paragraph. I've never heard of a writing-based class that states not to include intro paragraphs. My friend who is an English teacher, albeit at a public school, couldn't believe it either.

To top it all off, the only 5 papers we're writing this whole semester are due one week after the other. So by the time I saw my grade for the first and got the reasons why it was such, I was turning in the second paper and already made the same mistake with the intro paragraph.

He says he grades harshly at first but gives a final grade largely based on our improvement. He grades only on these 5 papers and the rest of the semester is going to be sitting around playing art critic. I do learn a lot from failure but it would be great if I was given enough time to absorb the lesson so that my next attempt doesn't repeat the same mistake. Freakin' community college...

Grades don't matter.

Well, the bright side is that you have the improvement part locked down, right?

I'd like to have his head locked down as I give him a Bulldog, Hacksaw Jim Duggan style!

Oh, I feel your pain.
As my brother said when I went back to school:"You're leaving the real world, and going into one where the monkeys make the rules and the monkeys are in charge."
