I played EQ2 for a couple of months back around the 3rd expansion...

I just couldn't stand the game.

I may try it again now that it's F2P, and see if the gameplay interests me.

Rynar: Even if it's a cool game, my problem with Shards of Dalya is that it's copyright infringement, in a huge way. Just because SoE doesn't think it's worth their money to shut them down doesn't mean it isn't wrong to blatantly rip off their game.

Also, I'm not sure how long it's been since you've played EQ, but: Questing still matters, Dev's are pretty involved, and the encounter scripts are pretty amazing.

Additionally, I like instanced content and the lack of such a huge involvement of skills (vs, say, WoW).

I've looked into SoD several times, and while it looks like the classic servers lots of people crave, I don't think EQ really came into its own until the GoD/OOW expansion pair, lasting up until TSS.

No. It isn't copyright infringement. American laws regarding this are garbage, and the server is hosted in Canada. As to the rest? Bro, you'll just have to take my word for it until you see it for yourself.

How is this not copyright infringement?

They're using the base files developed by another company to re-create the world developed by another company with some modifications.

Most of their code was even packet sniffed from live servers back in the early days!

It's a Canadian based server.

The fact that it's based in another country does not effect my feelings about the morality of stealing someone else's work. If you look back, I said nothing about legality...

I just think ripping off someone else's work in way they have made it painfully clear they do not want done, is wrong. It's quite obvious from their website (and they've made it clear in the past) that they are trying to fly under the radar, and skirt the issues with what they're doing.

Getting around the legality by having servers based in another country doesn't effect that.

Rynar. I resurrected him from his shallow grave in Surefall Glade.

As for the download, it's available: here.

I'll have to disagree with you.

I have no problem with that.

I'm just saying that the main barrier to me, personally, playing Shards is the copyright infringement issue.

I bit on this offer, though now I've encountered a problem. My previous characters are all gone. Fortunately, I kind of felt like starting anew. With that said, what servers is everyone playing on, of those of you who still play? I'm going to be a complete noob again, but I'd like to get back into it.

*edit*
While I'm at it, I suppose I have another question:

Does anyone have any idea how to turn on Luclin character models? By default, they appear to be turned off. At the server selection screen I found an options screen by mistake (it wasn't displayed until I pressed escape). Within that, it opened up an external video options menu. However, after seeing all the models were already checked, I clicked "finished." Upon logging in, I still have the old models. Within the actual game' options, I see nothing related to character models. This is going to piss me off.

They don't ever delete characters, but we have had at least 2 server merges in the last few years, so its likely your characters are still out there.

For example, I was on Terris, then we were moved to Prexus, and now we are on Rathe.

As for turning on Luclin models, I believe there is a switch in the INI file you can set to True.

I discovered The Combine server merged with Druzzil Ro/Xev. Unfortunately, my Combine characters aren't on that server. Now, I'm trying to remember if this particular EQ account is even the one I had the characters on. I had a couple. Unfortunately, there's no way to check prior to activating your Underfoot purchase, so I guess I have no choice but to go with this account now, even if that is that case (or else I'd have to buy the expansions again).

As for the character models, I found the .ini file. Unfortunately, it already has everything marked as "TRUE" for the Luclin models, yet it still doesn't load them. I sent in a tech support ticket, but I'm sure the wait on those is in the days if not weeks category. Oh well, I suppose the old models will do.

*edit*

I think I figured out my character model problem. EQ doesn't support DirectX 10 or later. I currently have Direct X 11 installed. Hopefully it'll load them after I install Direct X 9.0C along side 11, it'll load them properly.
