2 mocking birds decided to take up residence and nest somewhere in our yard. They also decided to attack the cat every time it is outside. Then they decided to sit right outside the house and screech and screech all day long because its not good enough that the cat was inside.....every time the cat peeked out the window they were parked on the bush outside screeching and squawking.

I've been up since 4am listening to this crap right outside my bedroom window.

I got my son's bb gun and shot the male. One shot knocked him off his perch. 3 more to the head so he would die. I left the female alone...there is probably a nest somewhere. But if she doesn't shut up I'm shooting her too.

I've never killed anything before except bugs and fish. Maybe I'll take up hunting after all.

EDIT: Changed thread title. Consider this the death of my innocence too.

Few little tidbits...

How did you know you shot the male? The two genders are indistinguishable from each other.

Mockingbirds are the state bird of Mississippi, and are typically classified as a song bird, making it normally illegal to kill them. Not always, some states have weird laws about what is a song bird. For instance, Ohio considered Mourning Doves a song bird, making it illegal to hunt them, but just about every other state has a hunting season for them.

You need a better BB gun if it took 3 shots to the head.

And lastly, Mockingbirds, if they can't get a threat to leave, or it constantly comes around, have a song that summons other mockingbirds to help deal with threat.

Maybe it wasn't a mockingbird. I dunno. The male was larger, dark grey with white trim. The female is much smaller with no white trim.
I've never killed anything before...didnt occur to me to see if it was illegal or not. I just saw it as a pest harassing my cat.
I actually have not heard anything out of them except really really loud screeching.

The first shot broke its neck, I just shot 3 times after that to be sure. I have no experience shooting anything, and I wanted to make sure it didn't suffer.

I'm guessing then that the one you shot was the male/female and the other was the juvenile, or you are correct and it wasn't a mockingbird.

I went outside to get a better look....with a hunter friend of mine on the phone. She has white on her wings when she spreads them...its the female and its a mockingbird.
Oops!

I don't think you'll get in trouble. I highly doubt anyone will ever find out. All you have to do is delete these posts quick...!

Yeah, its highly unlikely you will get into trouble, barring a police officer standing in your backyard when you shot it.

I've been known to take out a blue jay or two from around the yard for the same reasons.

I used to live in a house where a woodpecker would hang out on the fuse box on the other side of the wall and peck at it when I was trying to sleep. Yeah - bb gun is the way to go. If they don't leave when you throw things at them, they're too stupid to let live anyway.

My friend has been a hunter for decades and said its no biggie just hide the evidence (I gave it to the cat...she had a blast) and don't advertise it in the local paper or anything.

He said they have a problem with mockingbirds on their property sometimes and advised me to go ahead and shoot the female too if she wouldn't leave us alone, but I think I'll let her be.

He said in about 3 weeks she should be moving on anyway.

The red headed wood pecker and red-cockaded woodpecker are both federally protected btw.

If someone from, say, the wildlife and fisheries finds out, the punishments/fines are pretty severe, just as a warning.

Personally, I'm rather appalled that you'd kill something just because the noise was bothering you.

An owl statue does a great job of keeping them away, as does spraying them with a hose.

Now that I know its illegal, I won't be doing it again.

I'm quite surprised myself. It's really out of character for me. I've never killed anything other than bugs and fish in my 30 years on this planet.
Sorry to disappoint you.

The bush in which the birds chose to make their nest was 5 feet from the house, and less than 10 feet from where each of our two dogs are chained up during the day time. Plus the cat. I don't think a statue will keep them away, but I'll keep it in mind if I run across one, thanks.

I want to know why you've only got a BB gun. Have you not done enough quests to get an upgrade?

Mockingbirds (and most songbirds) consider owls to be natural predators, they do not consider dogs or cats to as bad. Cats, dogs, and humans they will try to drive away, Owls will usually stop them from building their nest.

As an alternative, instead of killing them you can always just remove the nest.

I actually tried that about an hour ago....I went to let the dogs outside and one of the baby birds had just flown into the street and before I could stop her, our dachshund killed it.
I chained the dogs up and got the ladder to move the nest but one of the other birds flew out and into the bushes and the cat got it.

I decided to leave the nest alone after that...I guess the parents have been so vicious towards the cat the past two days is because it is time for the birds to start learning to fly.
