It's the Marvel character Daredevil. I don't remember the artist for the shot I chose, but here it is at full size.
As you can see, I did some editing to both transparencize the background and fill in the portions of his staff's cable that go outside the original frame, because I like avatars that don't create a defined frame (whether explicitly, by not being transparent, or implicitly, by being visibly cropped to a square.) as an aesthetic preference.
Daredevil's one of my favorite superhero characters, and appeals to me because he represents interesting dichotomies -- he works as a lawyer in his public identity, as part of the system of law. Yet he slips into his secret identity to break the rules when they don't bend enough to see right done.
In addition, despite having no superhuman sources of strength, agility, or reflexes, he hangs with fellow heroes (on occasion; he's mostly works alone) and villains who outclass him with genuine superhuman abilities. This makes him an underdog in the same way as Batman -- he's a normal human working very hard to keep up with people beyond normal. It's a good theme that plays on the human spirit.
Daredevil is also "The Man Without Fear." I'd love to be a man without fear, even if it was in the manner in which Daredevil is -- because Daredevil does have a lot of fears, he has simply learned to suppress it and trust completely in himself and his skill, and in that way, function despite it.
And finally, he's unique among superheroes; he *does* have a superpower, but that superpower is essentially cancelled out by a flaw. He is blind, and his superpower allows him to "see." I like to joke that his superpower is to be normal. What it does, however, is cause everybody to underestimate him when he doesn't have the mask on; they assume he cannot see because he's blind. I like that he has to play blind (even though he technically is) to maintain the biggest mask he has; the assumption that despite occasionally being linked to Daredevil, he couldn't possibly *really* be Daredevil because look at what Daredevil can do, obviously he can see.
I've actually been considering changing it, though.
