My gf is turning 30 soon, and she's both a tech-lover (built her own computer) and a classic clothing/jewelry kind of girl, so I'm torn between getting her an iPad or a pair of diamond earrings. She's repeatedly expressed her desire to buy an iPad since before it was even released, but just keeps wimping out over the cost, so I know she'd love it. However, I'm worried that even though the iPad has that whole stylish thing going for it, it's still a tech gift that may not be personal/romantic/memorable enough for a 30th birthday. Diamond earrings, of course, are a safe bet, and she's told me before that she'd love to get a pair, but I've given her jewelry on several occasions over the two years we've been together, and it's starting to feel a little unoriginal/repetitive to me.

So, any thoughts/advice?

That's a tough one.
Getting someone a gift that they will get lots of use out of and something that she has expressed interest in (like an iPad) is pretty awesome. The best gift I think I've gotten for my husband was the surprise iPhone present. That was a year and a half ago and its still something that makes him happy.
On the other hand....sometimes the best gifts are the ones that people would never think of getting for themselves. And with a woman, (I don't care how geeky she is), there is something to be said for being frivolous and romantic with jewelry.
Personally, being a very similar woman....I would not be able to choose between the two myself and I would think you can't go wrong either way.
Which means....I haven't really helped you at all, have I?
Sorry!

Both of those gift sound incredibly expensive for someone you've only been seeing for 2 years. Just my opinion.

2 years is long enough to know if she is serious, least I think so..now 2 weeks, not so much!

Hmm I have diamond earrings..got them for Christmas one year. They were nice, but I only wear them on special occasions because I'm afraid I would lose them if I wore them everyday. Would hate to see them pop off and go down the shower drain. I also want an iPad badly...but can't justify the cost. I know if it was me..I would use the iPad everyday and think about you everytime I used it. Maybe make it fun by getting her the iPad and finding some sort of wallpaper for it so when she turns it on there is a huge banner saying "I love you" or whatever is appropriate :) then go through and leave maybe some notes..so when she opens up the note app there is a little happy 30 bday letter to her :)

that would impress me :) and 30th is a big one!

Well, that's my 2 cents! Just tell us how it went!!
Whatever you decide to do !!

Take them to a jeweler and have them reposted with screw backs, fine jewelry deserves to be worn.

Diamond earrings are romantic, can be quite reasonable in cost, less than the iPad and still look very nice. If you are looking for an endearing present that will last for the rest of her life, go with those.

The iPad is a buddy type present, not so romantic but eminently more practical than the diamond earrings. She will use it daily for a couple years before she moves on to something new and better and geekier and techier. It also has a monthly bite, will you be paying that (the gift that keeps on taking) or will she. Rhetorical, don't answer unless you feel the need.

Me, for a gift I'd go with the earrings as the outright gift and negotiate the iPad, as in, if you can handle the monthly fees, I'll get you the iPad.

Yes, I would probably try to get both, but I'm such a pushover when in love.

Really depends on the message you're trying to send, RD. She'll view the I-pad as less of a commitment, because for some reason our society has placed a love premium on diamonds. I blame Zales. If you do decide to go with diamonds, I would ask you to make sure they aren't blood diamonds.

I don't think that's true..that diamonds (except for a diamond ring) are viewed as a commitment. I just feel any man can go out and buy a pair of diamond earrings. But making it special, that's what it's all about. You could, I suppose, give them to her in a unique way..but in the end, they are just diamond earrings. Romance is in the act, not in the possession. If she is a complete lover of jewelry, then, yes, go for the diamonds. How did the jewelry make her feel when you gave it before? That should be a big hint.

Tamaar, I do have screw backs for my earrings, but I dunno, they were very expensive and I still worry they would come undone. I'm just not the type to wear them everyday. They are for fancy events, of which I have few of to attend.

Go for the Ipad, and save the diamonds for an anniversary or other romantic occasion.

Hasn't anyone told Kirra about the monthly fancy dress fine dining get-together for the Glade? Is there a teleporter in her neck of the woods? C'mon Mus, that's why you haven't been enjoying them lately. Is it her shift that is getting in the way? I mean heck, Rynar is cooking for the next one, somebody give her an invite and the codes. Heck, an evening on Crete, late Autumn in the Mediterranean, how could she resist?

Oh, and the rest of you that didn't get invites, err, uhm, I'm making this all up as I go. That's why there aren't any pictures of us at the Hadron Collider from the last one on the photo thread, yeah, right, that's the ticket.

Playing it cautiously, are we dear? Good attitude to have when it comes to men....but not with your jewelry...after all, diamonds are a girls best friend, remember? ;)
Throw caution to the wind. I double dog dare you to wear them all day tomorrow. Even if you do nothing but go to wal-mart in sweat pants.

I don't have nor do I want diamond earrings! I have a whole drawer full of earrings that I never wear because I'm too lazy to change them out for the studs I wear every day! I have a beautiful diamond pendant that hubby gave me for our 25th anniversary, that I wear whenever I can, which isn't often enough. My diamond ring he bought me for our 26th anniversary I didn't even want! Fine jewelry and me don't go very well together! I have already lost (found again) a diamond out of my ring, that now needs to be returned to its rightful spot! Nice jewelry is too much hassle for what it's (not) worth in my opinion!

Yeah, I can't speak for anyone else, but Phe would much rather have a fun or practical gift (like a video game) than jewelry. She doesn't wear jewelry much, earring hurt her ears (unless they're exceptionally light, and even then she can only wear them for short periods), she's afraid she'd lose it, etc.

Go for the iPad.

Sigh, let me know if I can help expedite that, now I understand why you've missed the last few.
