Now Obama can join the illustrious rank of people who received distinction in the line of oppressing their own people like Arafat.

I don't believe in tit for tat Monte, but considering you reported one of my responses to you calling your unconsidered and illogical statement stupid, that's a pretty assinine comment to make.

Feel free to retract or delete that inflammatory statement hypocrite.

Montegue and Aizle:

Barack Obama has not had the opportunity to earn a Nobel Peace Prize. There is no substantive body of work and effort to legitimate the prize. He should decline the award for both his own credibility and that of the prize. As such, until the man EARNS one, I'll put no faith in this preemptive and overly political gesture that tarnishes all the hard work and world changing effort required to win it in the past. Sadly, Obama's just the victim of a trend that's trivialized the significance and import of the endeavors the Nobel Peace Prize used to represent.

It's being reported that the president has accepted the award.

How do you justify the bolded word of that sentence?

Really? I was hoping he would decline to accept.

This is why I only pay attention to the Sciences. Chemistry, Physics and Medicine were all decent choices this year, although Medicine may have been a bit overstated as to the global importance.

Lets hope this prize get's held over his head as a drive to make his efforts worth it.

Whether he deserves it or not really won't be seen until a few years down the road, when we see how much he sticks to his guns and how well things work out for him- giving it to him now devalues the prize for him as well as everyone else.

This post was reported. Regardless of whether it might be considered trolling (inflammatory posts are not policed here), it is neither a personal attack nor an attack on its targets. The irony intended is rather clear, if misplaced.

I would be celebrating, had he *earned* anything of the sort. That's the entire problem.

Taly,

Lighten up.

Monte,

Obama has EARNED jack and squat. He got the nobel prize for talking a big game. Hell, one of the reasons they gave was for his efforts to reduce nuclear weapons (2 weeks after he was elected?), when he is, in fact, the commander of the second largest nuclear arsenal on the planet.

It's complete nonsense. The whole thing.

I agree that the timing of the nomination is very short. I'm also quite sure that the award was not presented based only on what he'd done up to the point of nomination, but that they are considering what's he's done and worked to achieve in the days since his election.

I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, just what I expect is actually happening.

I personally think that Obama has done quite a lot for America in the short time he's been our president. I'm not sure that I would have voted for him (not sure and don't really care who the other nominees were), but I think that humbly accepting the award is the only option he can really do.

Even CNN admits he hasn't earned it:

"President Obama today joined an elite group of U.S. presidents when he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Unlike his predecessors, Obama was chosen not for substantive accomplishments, but for inspiring "hope" at the start of his term"

I don't know if there is a statue/tchotchke handed out with the Nobel but if so, they should give him one that looks like Image

They've been advertising those a lot on TV lately. I can't help but wonder ... has anyone complained that Chia Obama is racist?

Actually, I have a personal anecdote about that, but I'll refrain from further derailment. :p

in all this no one has put forward who they would have PREFERED win.

Are people SO concerned that people might get something that they didn't earn they've completely forgotten the greater travesty of someone not getting something they DID earn?

This is my big complaint about people who assault various social programs. There is so much concern that people out there might be receiving something they didn't earn, that we forget the people who did earn something but simply through bad luck, or bad times DID earn it but didn't get it?

How many people would you allow to starve unjustly to make sure that one person didn't get food they didn't earn?

You're all so caught up in if Obama earned it or not (I dont personally think he did) but not one person has suggested who SHOULD have won it in his stead.

I think you get way too much mileage out of that feature.

The list of people nominated (205 this year, previous record was 199 in 2005) are not made available until 50 years after the award is given. I would love to see the list to make comparisons, but that isn't going to happen.

However, there speculations about how was rumored to be the "front runners", and based on those rumors, any of those people would have been awarded for actually doing something, not the promise of maybe doing something.

Or are you asking for recommendations we would present, without consideration of who was nominated?

I would love to tell you who should have won among the accepted nominees, but nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize were undisclosed this year.
