Has anyone encountered a problem when attempting to install SP1 for Vista?

I was prompted to install this when trying to install Starcraft 2. The installation appeared to be going fine, then upon a restart, it freezes with the error message
"!! 0xc01a001d !! 28809/97998 (\registry\machine\components\deriveddata...)"

and will not continue.

I can't get to the restore points, I can't start in safe mode. I am not sure what to try before nuking the installation and reinstalling from the Dell reimage disc.

Any firsthand experience with this here?

No personal experience as I skipped over Vista to 7. I did find some reasonable info at the following link http://indexme.blogspot.com/2008/10/vis ... ilure.html

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I remember seeing something similar happen once on the Vista SP1 update. I think my cursory research suggested that a security log filled up (and wasn't set to overwrite old entries) in the update process, bringing the update to a halt without any ways to correct the issue and resume it.

Nuke, reinstall. Make sure you've got plenty of disk space and the security and system logs (right click My Computer -> Manage -> expand the top few items in the tree to find your Event logs, right click on the appropriate logs and choose properties) will overwrite old events when they fill up (which is good practice anyways, along with increasing the size so this doesn't happen regularly and wipe out events you could have used to troubleshoot other problems), and apply SP1 again.

If you don't format in the reinstall, you should preserve non-Windows data, at least.

With Microsoft's assistance, had to resinstall Vista and support ran the two service packs for me so no errors occured.

Reinstalled and DLing my video card drivers now so I can install SC2 and get TF2 reinstalled and have all the updates get downloaded overnight.

Bleh, what a hassle. Starcraft 2 better be worth it. It was the impetus for this disastrous day of PC tech support.

EDIT - At least I didn't lose my porn. All still saved in the Windows.old directory. :P

That'd be a tragic day. What would I do with the extra 80gb on my hard drive?

It might have inspired you to find new porn.

Nothing worse than old, crusty porn.
