It was offered, though when I say "offered," I mean "mandatory for students present in attendance the day it was administered." It was proctored by military representatives during the school day. It's my understanding that's how it was in all schools in my county, as well as surrounding counties.

So we're clear....As far as I recall I think I asked for two threads to be deleted on a single occasion. (it might have only been one)

FarSky,
Wow, I guess that goes to show how different things are across the country, and making assumptions...well you know the rest.

Yeah, it was "offered" up in ND where I went to high school too. Much along the same definitions as Farsky's. The excuse from the school system was that it was a standardized test that they used as just another guage of how well they were doing. It's a complete mystery as to how all the recruiters got a hold of the test scores and phone numbers of the students so they could call us at home...

And if we're starting up an ASVAB epeen contest, I aced the test. As in not a single question wrong.

I took that test, as it was a scheduled school wide test for those there that day.

However, I couldn't tell you my score, since I greatly disliked the concept of taking yet another standardized test, so I had fun with it.

For example, my "name" was J. Alfred Prufrock.

How does anyone ace the complete ASVAB? Its like 8 sections and hours long with sections from automotive to pure memorization to chemistry.

I don't recall the test being that involved when I took it... 2 decades ago.

/shrug

8 sections sound right, although that was over 20 years ago so I may be fuzzy. I recall it taking about 2 hours or so and being 100+ questions.

It was nothing compared to the finals at Rose-Hulman. 4 hour chem and calc finals doth sucketh.

I "aced" it, as in, I was offered my choice of any job in any of the military branches ... in the early 70s, before Vietnam was over...right after they ended the draft...

hey, wait...

There's something strangely comforting about the fact that this board hasn't really changed in 10 years.

Except Taly does a lot better at staying out of these threads :p

EDIT - Oh yeah, and you're all ****heads. Carry on.

It's like watching that old married couple that argues all the time but really, deep down, they love each other... because why else would they keep coming back for more?

Yeah, it's kinda weird to think that I joined EverQuest (and the board) the fall after I graduated high school, and I just received an invitation to our 10-year reunion.

I took that test in 75, received the same offer. I asked for OCS, they said no. I asked for Special Services, which at the time was an entertainer's (USO) roadie and escort job, they said no. I told them I'd go home and think about it. I asked for a clause that gave me the right to quit with two weeks notice. They said no. I never did go back.

They called a few times. They never did say yes to anything I asked for, guess I never was a good negotiator.

You know, it's so cool and rebellious to not take the ASVAB in a country that has an all-volunteer military and no legal penalty for not taking it. And those bastards, how dare they CALL YOU ON THE PHONE to see if you might be interested!

Come on.

So this I presume has become the new random thought thread?

I can't speak for anyone else (but I'm assuming your comment is directed at me, as I'm the only one I see mentioning that I refused to take it), but personally, I balked at the idea that school time was being wasted on that dreck. Captive subjects, and all that.

You want to offer it? Fine. Do so on your own time.

Also, yeah, I didn't want to be bothered with (ever more) constant phone calls. Neither did I want my mother, who has chronic insomnia and rarely gets to sleep, to be woken up by someone pestering me to join in reindeer games that were not part of my future. I had already started receiving those calls simply because I was graduating, and "no" wasn't being viewed, apparently, as an acceptable answer.

Given the other crap that school time gets wasted on that's a pretty weak protest. Part of the point of it is to make those who might be interested aware of their options.

Why? So kids who are averse to it don't have to be exposed to it?

I've never heard of a recruiter calling any time other than normal buisness hours. Presumably they weren't the only people ever to call your house, so how they were any more of a problem for your mom than anyone else is beyond me.

You didn't want to join. Got it. Making you aware of your options and checking back to make sure you were sure is hardly some giant imposition.

What you SHOULD have done is said, "I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL." and then start jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and then perhaps he would have started jumpin up and down with you and you was both jumping up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL." And then the sargent might have come over, pinned a medal on you, sent you down the hall, and said, "You're our boy."

It COULD have been that way, but NO... you had to refuse. Slacker.

Yeah, there is that. I hate it when that happens.
