DE, I had to change my phone number to get the recruiters to stop calling me. So, yes, how dare they call me... and continue to call... and continue to call.

You want to offer it? Fine. Do so on your own time.

Also, yeah, I didn't want to be bothered with (ever more) constant phone calls. Neither did I want my mother, who has chronic insomnia and rarely gets to sleep, to be woken up by someone pestering me to join in reindeer games that were not part of my future. I had already started receiving those calls simply because I was graduating, and "no" wasn't being viewed, apparently, as an acceptable answer.

What you SHOULD have done is said, "I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL." and then start jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and then perhaps he would have started jumpin up and down with you and you was both jumping up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL." And then the sargent might have come over, pinned a medal on you, sent you down the hall, and said, "You're our boy."

It COULD have been that way, but NO... you had to refuse. Slacker.

Yeah, but then they're gonna ask if you've ever been arrested...

I took the ASVAB with no inclination whatsoever that I would ever join the military (or do anything else at all for that matter)...

I scored fairly well on everything except math (blegh!).

A year after I graduated, with no job, no car, no direction and still living at home, I had to look in the phone book to find a local recruiter. I had never received a single call from them.

Or you could have, you know, just waited till they gave up. Were they really calling you every 5 minutes or something? You must have been quite the prize.

I have a teenage daughter. I have to answer the phone sometimes 4 times in 15 minutes for her idiot friends to understand she's not home. The recruiters call her too. Guess which one is at a tolerable levl and which one is **** ridiculous?

I got a phone call from a Vermont Army recruiter about 6 months after I arrived at my first duty station in the Air Force. That was a fun call :)

Oddly, it was the only call I ever got from a recruiter without initiating contact myself...

Iwas called about twice a week from recruiters starting after I was already in delayed entry with the Army. It was fun stringing them along and then asking if I could be in two of the armed services at the same time.

I did none, had no intention of joining the military. Although a friend who wanted to join the Marines, told the Navy Recruiter I was very interested, even gave my phone number to him.

Now that guy would not quit, not even after my brother told him I was gay...

Uncle Fester is gay? I suppose we need to use that as an option to replace the Farsky is gay option is a lot of the polls.

My wife would be surprised for one. But my brother told the navy recruiter I was gay, but that did nothing to cut down on their calls.

Outed by your own brother, do you still talk to him?

That's okay Fester, your wife and Pheona can commiserate. It is so unfair and untrue, how can we say such disparaging things about their husbands.

Besides, gay is an old word and has several meanings. Surely you can find one that fits you at least occasionally.

I **think** I took that test in High School, but I honestly don't recall. I know I got hounded by recruiters, especially for the Navy (my dad served for 11 years or so). They eventually stopped bothering me.

Well, yes. Kids that are averse to it shouldn't have to be harassed by it. Especially with the military's penchant for bullshitting people about what they are getting into. And don't pretend for a moment that it doesn't happen. People were being outright lied to for years during the Bush administration, and are probably still being lied to now. It became a scandal, and eventually recruiters got nailed for it. They lie about the money, they lie about assignments, they lie about what the service is like, and they lie about combat. They lie.

I know that if the military pursues my children, they'll get my boot up their ***. I don't want them anywhere near my kids. If my children want to join, they can do so when they turn 18. Until then, stay the hell away from my kids. I can't trust them to be honest with my kids, given their track record.

What kind of lies are we talking about here.

Also, it's amusing how far OT this has gotten. :)

You're not being harrassed. It's just marketing. The national defense is essntial; if we're going to ahve the luxury of a professional, volunteer military, then the public has to expect that the military will try to recruit young people to fill it. Besides, they don't know who is "Averse" to it until they talk to people. Lots of those kids that get called back change their minds because they couldn't afford college, couldn't get into the school they wanted, didn't get a job, or their parents don't want them laying around the house.

Oh, you mean the part where it's THE MILITARY, and ultimately requirements change so that the way things were when the recruiters talked to you changed? There's a reason you sign an enlistment contract.

Quote:

Of course it happens. That's part of the miltiary. Plans change all the time. **** Generals get bullshitted on what's going to happen with their units and careers. Remember General Clarl, former SACEUR who ran for president as a Democrat? He got yanked out of his job 3 months before his tenure was up by Cohen simply so that the next commander wouldn't have a period over 60 days without being slotted in a position.

Quote:

No, they weren't being "outright lied to" nor did the Bush administration have anything to do with it. Recruiting has always involved talking up the benefits of the programs available. The point is to recruit a certain number of people.

Quote:

A few people got caught, which had nothing to do with the President.

No Monty, "they" don't lie. Some of them lie because they'r shitty recruiters and can't make their mission, but the vast majority are honest. They just put a positive "spin" on it because that's their job; to sell it. There's no way you can lie about "what service is like"; it's different for each person. You can't really "lie" about combat either, for the same reason.

No they won't.

Yes you can. You just hate the military and don't want to. Ultimately, however, you have no right to keep them away from your kids because they will turn 18. It's up to them; it isn't about you and your hate.

No, you can't trust them, DE. They lie to keep their quotas. They lie about signing bonuses. They lie about combat. They lie about the chances someone will be deployed. They **** lie. And they do it because they are under intense pressure to fill their quotas.

There's a fine line between harassment and marketing. Marketing is a pahmphlet, or an ad in the beginning of a movie. Harassment is nightly phone calls (yes, nightly). Harassment is hard-sell approaches door to door or in school.

You have a hard on for all things military, DE. That doesn't mean you're right. You're not. The military works for me. I'm a civilian. If they harass my children, they *will* get a boot up their ***. And while I'm posting said boot, they *will* call me sir. If they call me at my home (thank god for cell phones) before my Child is 18 and after I have instructed them not to call, it's harassment. I will be perfectly respectful towards them on their first phone call. In that call I will instruct them to never call the house again.

Oh, and while you're putting you're boot up the military's ***, videotape it so we can get a good chuckle.

That statement has *so many* levels of hilarity. It drips with self importance and fear that others won't acknowledge it. I mean he brings up a hypothetical event that is years (if not decades) away from even the possibility of occurring, and the first thing that pops into his head is that they must call him "sir"? Wow.

I didn't catch the recruiters who talked to me outright lying. I did catch them not answering the questions I asked and changing the subject.

"I know! I'll repeat myself, and I'll use the word 'quota' in order to make it sound liek a polcie quota for emotional impact! Clearly, this will convince everyone!"

No Monty, they don't lie about any of that. Especially signing bonuses. Kids don't pay attention to what they're being told, and hear what they want to hear, and then claim the recruiter lied to them. Kids at my reserve unit do this; they sign up, get the bonus, then don't come to drill. When the government takes the bonus back they mysteriously start coming to drill and then don't udnerstand that this was in the contract that they signed.

No it isn't. You're just making up your own definitions. It's not harrassment at all.

Not buying the nightly phone calls either.

Except that I am right, because I know what I'm talking about and you just run it through your little lens. of "The big, bad, mena military wants to recruit people! whaaa! How dare they advertise the educational opportunities and other benefits!"

The military does not work for you, either. The military works for the commander-in-chief, who works for the people in general, as a body. They don't work for any citizen personally. I might remind you that military members are citizens with the same rights you have, and by your idiot logic, they work for themselves.

No Monty, they will not call you sir, at least not because you say so. They might call you sir because they call everyone "sir", but they will not do so because you say so, and if they don't, there is nothing you can do about it. Nothing. You will be putting no boots anywhere or you'll be cooling your heels in the local jail. I know you want to feel like an internet tough guy, but you do not have any special right to inflict yourself on recruiters just because you got a phone call and think you're going to play protective daddy.

As for telephone harrassment, stop moving the goalposts. It's telephone harrassment when someone repeatedly calls you after you asked them not to regardless of who they are. That has nothing to do with it being the military.

LOL Monty. The idea that a) you'll put your boot up a recruiter's *** and b) you think you have a right to/can make them call you sir is so far out of touch with reality it's ridiculous. Obama works for me, right? If he does stuff I don't like, can I stick my boot up his *** and tell him to call me sir?

Wow, dude, really. Not only that, but how about your support the aspirations of your kids instead of telling them they can't talk to certain employers?

I hope I'm a good enough father to keep my politics away from my kids.
