This looks incredibly fun ... BBC report on the Eigenharp

One guy calls it a "sci-fi bassoon." The article points out that it resembles something used in the Star Wars cantina scene. Basically, you can get any number of sounds out of this thing - drums, bass, synthesizer, wind instrument, guitar ...

A professional model costs about 4000 pounds - so, about $7k? Yikes. Better take the place of a whole bunch of instruments. I wonder if they price of $800 for a non-professional version is right.

The future is just around the corner.

This instrument will never catch on.

Even if the price were to somehow come down to affordable territory...it would still not catch on.

A select few musician's might adopt the instrument because it suits the way they've always wanted to play. For everyone else, it's nothing new in terms of it's capabilities. It's really just a gimmicky interface with a steep learning curve for things that can already be done with existing, more user friendly instruments.

Yeah, it will always be niche for sure, but still, kind of cool. As well, the portability and sheer amount of things it can do in such a small package is pretty useful.

I don't think it's meant to catch on. I think, as much as I gleaned from the interview, that the instrument was a personal batch synthesizer (basically) with an interface customized for the creator. I am assuming selling it in limited production is to offset the development costs and hopefully make a buck or two.

Lots of DJ's do this, but the scale of development required is much smaller. Sasha has created an awesome Ableton LIVE controller for live mixing that was liscensed and sold under some other company. Although, this makes a little more sense, as the requirements for DJiing/MJing live are slightly less specific. Though I'm sure there quite a learning curve to his controller as well.
