So, I was sitting here watching Walker, Texas Ranger and it's an episode where a church is being targeted by neo nazis and such because the majority of the people that attend the church are black and it got me thinking. I remember watching the news way back and they would always be talking about how a black church got firebombed and whatnot, right? Well, at the time, I thought that when they said black church, they meant it was like an evil church because I thought that's what Satan worshipers called their church or whatever. Race didn't even enter my mind about it. But clearly, it was a racial thing. I even remember thinking out loud "Why the **** would anyone care if a black church got firebombed. They are evil!" But now I feel really dumb for not realizing it back then. It's like, WTF man?

When I was little I went to see 101 Dalmatians with my parents and flipped out. They had no idea why I was so freaked out, the movie was a little bit scary (Cruella De Ville is creepy) but not enough to warrant hysterics. The problem, they eventually figured out, was that I had just been to the aquarium with my preschool and they explained to us that if you cat a starfish into pieces the pieces all regenerate into whole starfish... and the movie explanation of how they got from 9 puppies to 99 wasn't clear to me. I thought they were cutting puppies up and letting them regrow!

I used to want to work at McDonald's when I was smaller because I thought the cashier was the richest person in the world. Somehow I had gotten it into my head they get to keep all the money they collect.

When I was very little (4 or 5) and was first taught about God, I was told "ask and ye shall receive."
I was so excited about the concept, that night I prayed for a candy bar and when I woke up and it wasn't under my pillow I was very, very disheartened.

Can't think of any personal experiences of this type off the top of my head, but I'm reminded of a bit from So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish:
Spoiler:
Douglas Adams wrote:
She looked down. Arthur could feel that it was one of those sorts of moments. The air seemed to stand still around them, waiting. Arthur wished that the air would go away and mind its own business.

"When I was a kid..." she said. "These sorts of stories always start like this, don't they? 'When I was a kid...' Anyway. This is the bit when the girl suddenly says, 'When I was a kid...' and starts to unburden herself. We have got to that bit. When I was a kid I had this picture hanging over the foot of my bed.... What do you think of it so far?"

"I like it. I think it's moving well. You're getting the bedroom interest in nice and early. We could probably do with some development with the picture."

"It was one of those pictures that children are supposed to like," she said, "but don't. Full of endearing little animals doing endearing things, you know?"

"I know. I was plagued with them too. Rabbits in waistcoats."

"Exactly. These rabbits were in fact on a raft, as were assorted rats and owels. There may even have been a reindeer."

"On the raft."

"On the raft. And a boay was sitting on the raft."

"Among the rabbits in waistcoats and the owls and the reindeer."

"Precisely there. A boy of the cheery gypshy ragamuffin variety."

"Ugh."

"The picture worried me, I must say. There was an otter swimming in front of the raft, and I used to lie awake at night worrying about this otter having to pull the raft, with all these wretched animals on it who shouldn't even be on a raft, and the otter had such a thin tail to pull it with I thought it must hurt pulling it all the time. Worried me. Not badly, but just vaguely, all the time.
"Then one day - and remember I'd been looking at this picture every night for years - I suddenly noticed that the raft had a sail. Never seen it before. The otter was fine, he was just swimming along.
She shrugged.
"Good story?" she said.

"Ends weakly," said Arthur, "leaves the audience crying, 'Yes, but what of it?' Fine up till there, but needs a final sting before the credits."

Fenchurch laughed and hugged her legs.
"It was just such a sudden revelation, years of almost unnoticed worry just dropping away, like taking off heavy weights, like black and white becoming color, like a dry stick suddenly being watered. The sudden shift of perspective that says, 'Put away your worries, the world is a good and perfect place. It is in fact very easy.' You probably think I'm saying that because I'm going to say that I felt like that this afternoon or something, don't you?"

"Well, I..." said Arthur, his composure suddenly shattered.

"Well, it's all right," she said, "I did. That's exactly what I felt. But, you see, I've felt that before, even stronger. Incredibly strongly. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a one," she said, gazing off into the distance, "for sudden startling revelations."

At one time I thought it involved a girl's belly button and that girls without inny's can't have babies.
