My XP only boots if I select this. I need to select it every time. How do I tell windows to copy this to the current config rather than needing manual selection?

I know about /lastknowngood in boot.ini, but I dont want to force it into 'last known good' mode every time or I'll lose the ability to roll back.... I just want to update my current settings to match those stored for last known good mode

It doesn't look like there's a way to overwrite your existing config with last known good (other than what you already mentioned), it's really intended to allow you to fix a problem created by a bad driver or piece of software. Do you have any idea what you loaded before you had to start selecting last known good at every boot? Also, when you try to boot normally, are you receiving an error message or blue screen with diagnostic data?

Um, it *should* replace the current config with last known good when you select it.

It sounds to me like something's happening when you shut down that's corrupting the registry or registering some boot-up process that's crashing.

So last known good has something in it that's detonating on the boot *after* the last known good. And since you keep going back to it, you keep setting up that bomb, so to speak.

Are you sure Kaffis? I did some research on the feature before I posted just to confirm what I knew about it, and nothing I ran into stated that it would replace your current configuration, but that it would simply allow you to boot and repair whatever you broke in your main profile.

It always replaced for me whenever I used it (used to happen frequently on an old machine).

That's safe mode.

Safe mode boots without loading, well, virtually anything. It doesn't modify anything about your registry or boot-time services or whatever, so you can figure out what went wrong/got corrupted and fix it.

Last Known Good basically is this: whenever you log in normally, Windows essentially copies the registry to a backup. The notion is that if you're able to log in, stuff's working right. When you can't get to the login screen, and/or you crash in the early stages of the login process, you boot into Last Known Good, and it copies from that backup to overwrite the bad **** that's causing crashes/locks.

This means that Last Known Good can get ****, still, as anytime you log in successfully with an error about to explode, it writes that into the backup and you lost your previous Last Known Good which didn't have that. So it's not a fix-all. As a for instance, if something in run or runonce (or something that requires a shutdown to finish so it can do a runonce next time, like maybe an installation of something) is loading a new runonce that's going to crash your computer, you'll be able to Last Known Good all day long, but every time you do, it's going to load the troublemaker back in for the next standard bootup.

Get to a command prompt and type: sfc /scannow

Good to know. I'm an overkill monster. If my home machine starts to freak out, I usually wipe it and reinstall, assuming windows is only going to get worse.

It wasnt particularly happy about sfc scannow - it asked for the xp disk then ignored it and popped up requesters for like every file till I cancelledf it. Oh well ;-p Thanks for trying!

Maybe you had a lot of corrupted files? And were you using the right disc?
Sorry, it's generally worked pretty well for me. Maybe someone else can suggest something better....lotta smart people here. I take notes when I come to this forum, lol!
