I've been on a sweet tea kick lately, but all that sugar isn't helping. I prefer a squeeze of lemon if I can't get properly made sweet tea (add the sugar while it's hot, then ice), but I can drink it straight too. No can do artificial sweetener, bleah.

Homebrewed herbal.

Green tea, mint teas, pretty much any of the herbal teas can be mixed in a variety of combination's to yield very tasty results.

I don't drink sugary drinks (haven't since...midway through high school, I guess), because sugary things leave my mouth feeling as though its coated with a slimy, sticky, syrupy residue that just feels nasty. On the rare occasion I order tea from a restaurant, I order unsweetened tea, and then add some kind of artificial sweetener to it.

It tastes good when sweetened. But what's always mystified me is that people regularly drink tea unsweetened, which just. tastes. nasty.

I will occasionally add stevia or sucralose (in small amounts) to a cup of hot tea to take some of the edge off, if it's particularly strong. But some people actually enjoy the taste of tea as-is.

Some people also enjoy their Bourbon straight, with no diet 7-up, or coke or some other ghastly sweet drink to screw up the taste of it.... (as another example.. there are many many others).

Since I've been on my 'no more diabetes for ME' kick, I've almost completely stopped eating anything sweet at all... artificial or otherwise, because I find that if I eat something that tastes sweet, it makes me crave more sweet things, which is baaaad juju.

So now, when I have tea (which isn't all that often), I do it sans sweet (and lemon.. blegh on the lemon).

You know, at first, I couldn't drink tea without lemon and sugar. Then I couldn't drink it without lemon. Now I usually drink it straight and only use lemon to break up the monotony. When it's time to hit up Chipotle though, they have some downright awesome black tea.

It's kind of like when you're e a teenager and all your ghetto-ass friends are buying you booze. They're feeding you forties of Mickeys and Old English along with the occasional something-and-Tanqueray. You drink them and you're thankful for free alcohol even though it tastes like ***. Then all of a sudden your friends get crazy and switch up to Red Dog and the transition is painless for you. I'm not really sure where I was going with this but it's pretty cool that you don't pass out from drinking too much tea and wake up with the word "BALLS" written on your forehead.

I'm with Midgen. And the only thing worse than sugared tea is ANYTHING with artificial sweetener. GACK! It's so chemical.

Unsweetened iced tea is always appreciated when I go out to eat, but I haven't yet tried to make any myself.

Someone on the Glade, probably our resident moose, once referred to sweet tea as hummingbird food. When I moved out to western PA, I finally found some for sale and bought a gallon. They could not have been more correct.

I managed to finish it and all, but... wow. :p

Iced tea is my drink of choice, but I mostly drink a local brand. Aside from having a bit of lemon to it, it's very very plain without being overly herbally or overly... fake isn't the word, exactly, but it doesn't taste chemically as per Taamar's post. It's sweet (320 grams of sugar in the gallon... less than a can of Coca-Cola if the intarwebs can be trusted) but for some reason it doesn't assault you with sweetness like soda or especially sweet tea. I guess it's due to the other flavors -- the lemon seems suspect to me. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a gourmet brand or anything... on the contrary, it's pretty cheap quality. But that's what makes it good, IMO. :p Doesn't try to do anything fancy!

Makes for great mixing with orange juice, which is what I do as my main drink of choice. I've had some big name iced teas like Lipton or Arizona and I can't imagine mixing them with orange juice because of how strongly flavored they tend to be.

edit: I do have a bit of a vice for Snapple green tea with peach. It certainly doesn't have much natural taste to it, but hey... :p

My wife is all about the unsweetened tea. Me? Has to have sugar, probably lemon. Can't stand the feeling I get in my mouth - I think it has something to do with the tannins, and is the same reason I don't like red wine. Sugar seems to mitigate that, a bit.
