60-70 weekly solo including groceries, outs, coffee and vending.

I buy a lot of generics buy good meats on sale.

We spend way more than we should for just the two of us, and we don't go out to eat, except maybe once or twice a year! Hubby usually does the shopping (big mistake!!) because the store is near his work. I've already sat him down and told him he has to stop buying New York strip steaks "because they looked good"!! I think he is finally realizing that with his impending retirement in 9 months, we can't afford to buy like he is used to!

I find steak for the same price as ground beef, most of the time- get the cheaper cuts, and marinate and cook them well, and you can't tell much difference.

I found ground beef at whole foods for 99 cent a pound last fall. Bought all of it. That allowed me some wiggle room for ribeyes. I can totally tell the difference.

Any cut I can find for under $2.00 a pound... Flank steak, round steak, skirt steak....

And as Tamaar mentioned, finding a good sale and getting a ton works too.

My local grocery store also sells whole uncut portions of steak- we got 18lbs of trimmed, uncut ribeye for $25 or so. I took an hour, cut it into lots of nice little steaks, and tagged them in 1lb bags... Lasted us for quite a while.

Flank, skirt, and flap are premium cuts here, $7 a pound. Round isn't much cheaper. That's not even the stuff I get at Whole Foods, that's at the regular store.

I would encourage you all to find a small, organic, local cattle ranch and butcher shop, self contained as a small business in your area, and get directions there. You can usually find one within a 3-5 hour drive no-matter where you live. Call them ahead of time, and ask about their high weight package deal discounts. Usually they will package 80-100 lbs. of various cuts of beef, all of high quality, into a bundle and sell it for $100-$120. Find a basket you like, and plan your next few months around it, then butcher it, cryo-vac it, and put it into your meat freezer in your basement. This will literally save you thousands of dollars.

When I was a kid one of my foster parents did this. They bought a whole side and wrapped it all individually in butcher paper and put it in the deep freezer.
We don't have a deep freezer, or a basement....but its worth looking into, thanks.

Actually Taamar, you'll probably be able to get one for free. Talk to your distributors. I've gotten several for free from Sysco.
