The Economist doesnt appear to be fond of the book:

Once upon a time it was the province of philosophy to propose ambitious and outlandish theories in advance of any concrete evidence for them. Perhaps science, as Professor Hawking and Mr Mlodinow practice it in their airier moments, has indeed changed places with philosophy, though probably not quite in the way that they think.

It doesn't mean its false and if it serves as a way to create a model that works better than the previous one it doesn't really matter if thats they the universe "is".

Other than that the existence of pluto was based on observable evidence of interaction - not a possible explination of interactions that could never be proven because they are by definition unobservable.

That's a poorly worded and/or dubious objection to the book.

It... it all makes sense now:

It's not strings that vibrate in N dimensions, but spaghetti that do! Spaghetti Theory unites everything!

Unified theory of everything AND religion combined! I need to get this published.

Just wanted to say I picked up the book. Might post impressions when I'm done, but iPhone Kindle reading in-between jobs doesn't afford much time :p

To be honest, if anyone should have a chip on their shoulder about there being a God or not, this guy should.

And yet he doesn't. While he certainly has expressed some negative words about the church itself, one of his best friends is a Bishop, and when asked directly, several years ago, whether he believed in God, he paused longer than usual before he answered "If I say yes, you will misunderstand what I believe about God, but if I say know, you will think that I do not have faith. Therefore I decline to answer that question."

He's a pantheist, from what I understand. And the chip on his shoulder you'd expect from someone who has lived with his disability for so many decades isn't there. Not much, anyway. He has a rather healthy view of his illness. He has lived for nearly 40 years with a disease that was expected to kill him in 2 or 3. And he believes he owes his success in his field to the fact that he really has had to focus inward, since his body was essentially useless, his mind was all he had.
