Women sharing menstrual cycles? I don't mean the process, which involves pheromones. I mean what physical need caused that particular evolutionary path. I suspect it probably had something to do with the convenience of shared pregnancy times and birthing periods in early nomadic hunter/gatherer societies. Any thoughts?

I would guess so that everyone could be fertile at once, sharing pregnancies and such.
Not to get gross, but if you go waaay back it was probably safer to have one time where everyone was bleeding than everyone on different schedules....all kinds of safety issues regarding attracting animals and stuff too.

I dunno. I'd be interested to hear some real researched explanations.
While you're at it, could you please explain the purpose of morning wood?

He's either been dreaming about you or needs to pee real bad.

For most of us, erections make it harder to pee. Not impossible mind you, but you have to think about relaxing the right muscles.

Unless he jumps out of bed and heads for the bathroom, assume he's been dreaming warm happy sexy dreams featuring his mind's perfect you.

Yeah but doesn't every man wake up every morning with an erection?
What is the evolutionary purpose of that?

I wouldn't say morning glory always happens. Then again, I have low testosterone.

I think that anything sexual comes down to the natural desire to keep the species from going extinct. As language and society evolve, men and women share their experience and more complex systems are formed. Sex in its natural state is neutral -- it exists solely for reproduction. Advanced Human thought patterns have allowed it to also become a pleasure-only experience.

No, not every man. Young men tend to, but not always. Old men occasionally have non-erotic dreams.

If he's waking up every morning with an erection, you're letting him drink too much on the evening or really turn him on.

Well, he could be cheating on you in his dreams, but with the two of you, I doubt it.

I'll go with the "damn I'm sexy" argument then. :P

I really thought it was every man, every morning. Ah well.
But seriously, what's the purpose of that? So that men can procreate even in their sleep?

So they'll be ready when they wake up. Take every opportunity you get.

I only get morning wood when I need to take a piss. Which is fairly frequent in the morning. I've always assumed it's a don't-piss-yourself thing.

as for shared menstrual cycles. I wonder if this has to do with multiple wives vs a single man, and creating a "breeding season"?

Consider that in nearly all families/herds/groups of animals, this occurs. It allows the male to focus breeding efforts over a shorter period of time, and still maintain the birth rate, rather than have it necessary that male is constantly around.

So....maybe back in the day women traveled in packs and only needed a man during breeding season? And since the window of opportunity during ovulation is only a few days, he had to be ready to go 24/7 so women were riding him while he was sleeping....hence the need for morning wood...the ability for the penis to still function without the man being conscious?

Sweet. I live history.

I'm not quite sure how you got that out of my statement. First, I'm not sure it was a few days so long ago. Second, it's been pretty well established that men were around. Hunting, defense required men. Also, fixing leaks in the cave and taking out the left-over mammoth bones. Lastly, I think most men could have sex many times in a few days, whilst conscious.

What is the breeding pattern of Apes? I have to believe that our ancestors weren't that far off. Several partners per male, I believe.

Gender was never spread that generously for the men. Alpha males got the women, everyone else got frustrated.

Then all the males know when to go on that extra-long mammoth hunting trip?

If they know what's good for 'em....could you imagine being stuck in a cave all winter with 35-40 women who all have PMS on the same days??
Shoot. Even I couldn't handle that I don't think!

Don't polls about the subject suggest that most women prefer sex in the morning compared to the evening?

It might not be that bad, considering back then it was ok to club women and drag them around by their hair....

I actually posed the same question to Phe a couple of weeks ago...wouldn't it be more dangerous for every woman in the tribe to "sync up," for the reason you mention? :D

Maybe it's so that they'd sync and not have babies during harsher months or something, but it doesn't seem good to have your entire female population waylaid by baby care simultaneously. *shrug*

Perhaps something to do with having multiple women in the tribe available to nurse if a mother dies in childbirth? Remember, synchronized cycles won't affect what season children are born in, they'll just make it more likely that they're born within a few days of each other every month.
