While you're at it, could you please explain the purpose of morning wood?
Science!
There's really not a purpose, it's just a consequence of how erections work. An erection is actually the natural, relaxed state of a penis. The only reason we don't walk around with a permanent hard-on (well, some of us anyway ...
) is that we have a series of muscles that can clamp down and partially restrict the blood flow. Like every other muscle, these muscles tend to relax during sleep.
On a related note, priapism is pretty much the complete opposite of this. At first, everything is normal: muscles relax, blood flows in, erection commences, hilarity ensues. But then instead of either staying relaxed or going back to a
partially constricted state, they clamp down completely, cutting off all blood circulation. Since the blood already in the penis can't get out, an erection is maintained. But since blood can't get in, either, this is Very Bad Thing. They're not screwing around when they say to "seek immediate medical attention if you have an erection lasting longer than 4 hours..."
