Let's be honest. 13 dwarves is overkill. You don't really need that many, and the camerawork gymnastics to do the shots is a headache.

Besides, this film is too much of a sausagefest.

Instead, we'll have Bilbo, Gandalf, Bilbo's hot hobbit girlfriend, Arwen, and 3 dwarves, none of which will be Thorin Oakenshield (because a dwarf king would be confusing -- everybody already knows that Aragorn is the king), but one of which will be Balin, in order to leave the door open for a sequel about reclaiming Moria.

It's not so much that he is super awesome(I mean, he was, but...) it's the stuff that happened around there. The Old Forest and the Barrow-Downs. And later, when he gives the hobbits their swords. There is no **** explanation as to why Merry's sword was able to wound the Witch King, allowing Eowyn to slay him. It made it seem that the only reason she was able to kill him is because she had two X chromosomes, when it was really Merry that should have gotten the credit. It just had the whole snowball effect that made the movies much less enjoyable. Also, elves at Helm's Deep. Give me a **** break.

What Raltar said. The chapter in the book about the hobbits imprisonment in the Barrow Downs was one of the scariest in the story. And the swords, of course. The books specifically state:
Quote:
So passed the sword of the Barrow-downs, work of the Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-kingdom when the Dúnedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his undead sinews to his will.

Meh, its not particularly important to the narrative.

Merry's a supporting character, why would he have the awesome ubersword of Lichy Doom? We didn't spend a lot of time with the hobbits that weren't Sam and Sam's GF, so Merry being an unstoppable badass would have been a "Wait, what?" moment for those that didn't read the books.

But it's okay for some random chick that barely shows up half way through the Two Towers to kill the Witch King for no apparent reason other than the aforementioned X chromosomes?

Sure. Because that's what the prophecy said. And it made sense in the context of the movie.

Glorfindel's prophecy isn't even mentioned in the movies as far as I can remember. Except for what the Witch King said right before getting stabbed by Merry. Also, Merry isn't a Man, he is a hobbit. Merry should get the credit no matter what. It's kinda like Eowyn came along after Merry killed the Witch King, and as he way dying, she stabs him and says, "Hey! Look everyone! I killed the Witch King of Angmar! I'm so awesome!" when she really didn't deserve any credit except that she distracted the Witch King long enough for Merry to sneak in and kill him.

That sequence with the witch king happened in the movie pretty much identically to the books. The only difference is we don't know why Merry's blade works.

Except the movie completely downplays Merry when he was the real hero of that particular fight.

K, so Eowyn isn't good enough to get the kill.

Is it cause she's a woman?

No, it's because she would have died if it wasn't for Merry. Like I said before, the movie makes it seem like the only reason she was able to do it was because she was a woman. It had nothing to do with her being a woman. It had everything to do with the Westernesse sword that Merry stabbed the Witch King with.

I don't believe this at all. If you go back and read what Gilraen posted right out of the book, the Witch King was basically dying after Merry stabbed him. He was coming apart. Anyone could have come by and did the exact thing Eowyn did and the result would have been the same.

And we come full circle. By removing the Old Forest, Tom and the Barrow-Downs, we don't know.

I always got the impression that Merry's blade undid the protections that made the witch king invulnerable. Eowyn's blow did the killing, it just wouldn't have worked if not for Merry's.

Because its a detail that doesn't matter.

It clearly does matter because otherwise the scene makes absolutely no sense and kinda makes the Witch King look like a little *****, especially(in the movies) because he basically just ***** slapped Gandalf not 5 minutes before. But as soon as you realize that Merry's sword took all of the magic out of the Witch King, it suddenly makes sense.

I felt the same way, but upon reading the passage again, I don't really think so anymore.

Made perfect sense to me.
Witch-King "Yar! I can be killed by no man!"
Eowyn "***** please, I'm not a man, I'm a woman!"
Witch-King *dies*
theater *cheers*
Fanboys "OMG THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN RIGHT!!!"

Beorn wasn't a dwarf.

But yeah, 13 is an extreme amount. Snow White's dwarfs were a bit too much to take in. Now practically double that number. Sheesh.

Didn't say he was. I was just pointing out that Raltar was way underselling what PJ is capable of. =P

I'm actually rather dubious how a movie with a main cast composed of a wizard, 13 dwarves and a hobbit is going to appeal...

Raltar speaks for me. No Tolkien fan would think differently.

Yes, I am purposely setting this up for the opportunity to bring out true scotsman fallacy.

The movies were better than the books. Due in large part to their omissions, be they pointless characters, or dry, useless descriptions.
