So, the closer I get to Dec 11th, the more freaked out I get about the process of giving birth again...
the last time was 8 years ago, completely natural, and the most painful experience of my life (and I've experinced a lot of pain!)

I wanted to cheer myself up so I have spent a lot of time online trying to read "positive birth stories." (Not a lot of them out there! Everyone wants to complain it seems.)

During my "research" haha, I came across something I had never heard of: Orgasmic birth. That is so weird to me. There are women out there that not only feel no pain during labor and delivery, but find it pleasurable??

You guys ever heard of anything like this?

Here is one of the articles about it http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Story?id=6120045
There is also a video in that link. Here is the article text:
Quote:
Painful. Excruciating. Unbearable. These are the words most often associated with childbirth.

Share
Is it possible to have an orgasm during childbirth? But what about pleasurable? Blissful? Euphoric?

Some women even say that instead of agony, childbirth can be ecstasy.

Amber Hartnell of Hawaii said she experienced an orgasm during labor when she gave birth to her son in September 2005.

"All of a sudden the orgasm just started rolling through and rolling through, and it just kept coming, and my whole body was spiraling and rolling, and I was laughing and crying," she said.

Hard to imagine? Hartnell and her husband, Nassim Haramein, were shocked as well. Although they had spent many hours planning for their son's birth, in a tub under a tree outside their home, they say they never planned for an "orgasmic" birth.

Haramein was amazed -- and also relieved -- to see his wife experience such pleasure.

"It made me feel like everything was gonna be all right," he said. "The experience didn't have to be a traumatic, painful experience. It could be an experience of ecstatic joy."

"It is, as we say, the best-kept secret," said Debra Pascali-Bonaro, a childbirth educator for 26 years. "I believe by women having such terrible fear. … Women aren't getting the choices they need, to make the experience as easy as possible."

Labor Orgasms Are 'Basic Science'
To prove that it is possible to have pleasure in childbirth, Pascali-Bonaro made a documentary called "Orgasmic Birth."

Tamra and Simon Larter of suburban New Jersey were one of the couples that allowed Pascali-Bonaro to film their most intimate moments of labor. For their second child, the Larters wanted a natural birth with midwives at their home. They spent part of Tamra Larter's labor kissing and caressing.

"The physical touch and the nurturing was just really comforting to me," Tamra Larter said, adding that she ultimately experienced an orgasmic birth. "It was happening, and I could hardly breathe, and it was like, 'oh, that feels good.' That's all I could say really."

Dr. Christiane Northrup, a board-certified OB-GYN and author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" and "Mother-Daughter Wisdom," said orgasms during labor are caused by basic science.

Tamra Larter allowed the birth of her second child to be filmed as part of a documentary titled "Orgasmic Birth."
(Tamra Larter)"When the baby's coming down the birth canal, remember, it's going through the exact same positions as something going in, the penis going into the vagina, to cause an orgasm," Northrup said. "And labor itself is associated with a huge hormonal change in the body, way more prolactin, way more oxytocin, way more beta-endorphins -- these are the molecules of ecstasy."

Northrup says that women's expectations can have a large effect on how pain is perceived.

"Whenever you expect pain, you tense up your muscles, your stress hormone levels go up and that increases pain," she said.

Orgasmic Birth: Exploring the Options
Pascali-Bonaro said that one of the missions of her documentary is to show how the hospital experience should be improved to help decrease pain for laboring women.

Despite her husband's concerns, Claudia Montes opted to have a natural birth with her third child in hopes it would be a pleasurable experience.
(Courtesy Claudia Montes)"If we look at most other countries in the world, women have a lot of options. They're allowed to be upright, they can move in labor. They can use warm water. They can use balls. There's so much that they can do that makes the experience easier," she said. "In the U.S. today, you walk in a typical hospital, you're put in bed on your back. That in itself makes labor longer and harder and more painful."

Joining in this message are women like Karen Brody, a playwright who wants women to make empowered choices about their birth experiences.

As part of her organization Birth on Labor Day, or BOLD, she developed a play called "Birth," performed in communities to spread the message about new options in childbirth.

Kimberly Baker, a mother from Memphis, Tenn., directed and acted in one of the "Birth" productions, portraying a woman who ultimately experienced an orgasmic birth.

"Unless you've met somebody who's had a positive, natural birth experience, and you've heard them tell the truth about their experience, then all you have is the unknown," she said.

To actually experience an orgasmic, or pleasurable birth, Northrup says it's important for women to lose their fear and their inhibitions. One method is to practice relaxation techniques. For Hartnell, chanting and doing yoga helped transform the pain into what she calls simply "sensations."

Another key element is not to block those sensations with anesthesia -- a prospect that is not pleasing to the many women who rely on modern medicine to avoid intense suffering during childbirth.

"The process of labor is there for a reason," Northrup said. "It is part of the human experience to experience pain, the other side of which is this incredible ecstasy."

Claudia Montes, a New Jersey mother of three, was determined to experience that ecstasy.

After giving birth to her first two children with an epidural, she wanted to have what she calls a "pleasurable birth" at the hospital, without pain medication. But her toughest obstacle turned out to be her husband.

"I don't understand choosing pain over, you know, modern medicine where you could be blissed out artificially," said her husband, Jay Edlin.

Montes disagreed, saying, "The whole thing is he didn't want me to suffer. And my whole thing is, you know, suffering is perceived." Montes hired a midwife instead of a doctor and practiced hypnosis for months in order to relax for labor. Her hard work paid off.

"I didn't feel pain," she said. "I was in bliss, because I felt safe, because I felt empowered."

Even her husband agreed she chose the right path.

"She ultimately was right and I was wrong. I never envisioned that, you know, it would have such a happy ending," he said.

For women who hope to create a similarly happy ending for their labor, Pascali-Bonaro hopes they realize that it's possible, but the goal is not necessarily an actual orgasm.

"I hope women watching and men watching don't feel that what we're saying is, every woman should have an orgasmic birth," she said. "Our message is that women can journey through labor and birth in all different ways. And there are a lot more options out there, to make this a positive and pleasurable experience."

I know you didn't have time to read that article between my posting and your response time. If you are not going to read it, go away!

So.....you gleaned what you thought was the appropriate information from that article and my post, thought of an equally appropriate response, managed to type it and click submit all in less than 60 seconds?

Really. Go away.

If my response has violated forum rules then you can report me to the moderators, but if not, then I am happy with it, for my responses are for my own pleasure and the pleasure inflicted on other people, or pain inflicted, is incidental.

LadyKate: No, I had not heard of it, but from the article it sounds possible. From my experiences, I'm not so sure.

As for the other responses, for LadyKate and anyone else who cares, two things:

1. please don't feed the trolls.

2. In the top right hand corner (of the default board), there is a User Control Panel.

If you click it, you will find a menu on the right hand side of the new screen and at the bottom of it a Friends and Foes link.

Clicking it and then clicking on Manage Foes you can add his name to the list. After that all posts by that person (or whomever you put in there) will show up as a bar with their name there (and an optional button each time so you can chose to read their posts if you want).

It does not stop you from seeing their posts when other people quote them, but it cuts down on the number of times you are forced to read their responses. I'm not a big fan of ignoring people, but sometimes people prove that they really are not worth your time.

Sorry for the hijack LadyKate

Thanks Gorse.
If you want to send any positive labor stories or hints on natural pain management my way... :)
(I think I would be allergic to an epidural...I've had local anesthetic twice and both times my blood pressure dropped and I fainted.)

I have heard of it, actually- there was a seminar at our university given by a local midwife- I didn't get to go, but my wife did, and found it very interesting.

A lot of it has to do with the much more calming surroundings that come from using a midwife vs. a hospital delivery, not to mention a great many of the problems that come from epidurals, induction of labor, and scheduled c-sections.

From what I've heard, inducing labor especially can have long term consequences in relation to mother-child bonding, as well as to recovery after birth, including post partum depression.

If you have a good midwife in your area, or a good birthing clinic, I would check them out.

There is a reason The Farm had such excellent birth rates and almost no complications.

I've heard of this. I didn't experience it, however.

I can't complain, I had very easy and fast (relatively speaking) childbirth for both children.

I have heard of such a thing. It seemed perfectly plausible. The same region is being stimulated, after all. Granted, the head of a baby is considerably larger than the head of an adult penis, but some women like fisting.

My stepson and daughter were both 100% natural childbirths, no drugs or anything - stepson born at home and my daughter at a birthing center, both with a midwife. You can do it (again)!

My daughter was going to be a water birth. We were actually in the tub until literally a few minutes before real pushing started, but then got out for a minute and bam, she was out in no time (easy for me to say huh).

My wife had been listening to these hypnotherapy-based CDs about childbirth - she was freaked out about going through the experience again too. I think the basic gist was just to try to do some self-affirmation about being in a good place, mentally and physically, and just try to stay out of your own way and let your body do its thing. She went and got these CDs - Hypnobirthing, by Marie Mongan - that were basically just relaxation exercises. I mean it's not like they were directly responsible for reducing pain or anything, you can't just not be present in your body for the experience... but there's a lot to be said for the idea that fear and tension can make the experience a bad one. The more you affirm to yourself that the experience is going to be okay, and positive, the more it really will be. And by the same token if you go into it dreading it, odds are it's going to be worse than it might have been otherwise. That's what I got out of the CDs/books anyway.

Thanks Jeryn, thats actually really helpful. That pretty much sums up most of the stuff I've read about hypnotherapy so far...kind of the approach I'm hoping for.

Birthing is a very individual experiance, but it is called labor for good reason. It is work.

Make sure you are as fit as possible before labor. It will make it much more tolerable and go faster. You will be ready for the work involved. I was in the best shape of my life when I had my son.

Make sure you understand labor; its stages and likely patterns. Knowledge decreases anxiety which decreases pain in turn.

My labor story is not the typical one you hear:

I was an Intern when I was pregnant (which irritated the Nuns who ran the place no end, but they could not say anything ;) ) Every day I exercised, usually swimming, for 45 to 60 minutes. Friday afternoon, I completed clinic and then ran over to my OB for a quick check. He examined me, looked up and said "You know that you are in labor?"

"No, I didn't know. Ok, I will go home, get my already packed case and go to the hospital."

"No you won't. You will get in this wheelchair and my nurse will push you across the parking lot to the hospital." At my totally befuddled look he told me I was 7 centimeters dialated. (baby starts coming out at 10!)

Well... I went to the hospital, get changed. Feel totally normal so I get up and walk, and except for 15 minutes when stage 1 ended (opening everything up), until stage 2 started (pushing the kid out) I had no pain. None.

It is not a perfect story. ;) His first action on arrival was to pee on his mom.

Thanks Jeryn!

Oh SG you lucky woman you! That is what I wish would happen to me! Unfortunately, I have not been physically active at all the last several months...no time and the weather has been nasty.
I've only managed to sneak out on a couple of long walks.
Is it too late to get in shape? Hahaha I'm 32 weeks Friday.

Not much to tell. Both children were born naturally. I was in labor with my son for 5 hours, only about 2 of that "hard labor." My water didn't break until I was already at the hospital, at least I never noticed it.

My second (my daughter) I barely had time to get to the hospital. I woke up to a small contraction, and she was born 45 minutes later.

Hahahahaha! Yeah but if you read all the stuff and watch the video dad was part of it too with the kissing and caressing in early labor and stuff.

Weird, huh?

Birthing is about 50% of the reason why I don't want kids... 10% being the 9 month of suffering prior, and 40% being the 21 years of suffering after.

Mine was not typical for a first time mom. Water broke at home at 10AM Labor was from 12:00-8:55PM. Then sean was born, but i don't remember it. I was going natural. Didn't want to but my body just moved to quickly for its own good and before i knew it they were telling me to push without my ep. However, what was weird was i kind of just wanted to be left alone and I zoned and really don't remember the pain.

Remember, this is the only pain you go through in your life with a prize at the end.

I've read of orgasmic birth experience, but never known anyone who claimed to experience it. I'd imagine it is rare enough to count as an urban legend, or restricted to the ladies who already enjoy large doses of pain.
