So, on a complete whim, I dug out my old Diablo 2 + LoD xpac and re-installed it.

From a technical standpoint, the game has not aged well at all. Max resolution is like 800 x WTF.

BUT, that all pales in comparison to the sheer addictive joy that is killing mass amounts of enemies and loot near infinite amounts of equipment. It's that juicy carrot on a stick you are always chasing, just so you can catch it and start chasing the next juicier carrot.

It's just so satisfying in an almost primal sort of way.

Damn I want Diablo 3 :/

Yeah I had Torchlight, actually, and made it through 1.5 campaigns.

Fun game, but just kinda lacked something that Diablo had. Hard to put a finger on.

They need to do Diablo 3: Prologue or something to give us Diablo junkies our fix.

I felt the same way about Torchlight.

I've been wanting to go back and mess around with Diablo II, but I can't find my original CD keys... Just the expansions. And I really don't feel like buying another copy atm.

Surely it can't be too hard to find a serial.

I was always hoping that the next Diablo game would be a prequel. They kinda made it harder to continue the story at the end of the D2 expansion.

I always thought a prequel would be perfect (and awesome) because you could play as the champions who imprisoned the Prime Evils into the soulstones in the first place, and play out that scenario.

^^^
That could always be the D3 expansion.

Which would make it a prequel . . . to a sequel.

Torchlight is a very good diablo 2 clone, which it should be, considering it's made by exact same developers who created diablo 2 before going off to form their own company.

That said, it's missing something. I never liked Diablo. Torchlight is like Diablo with even less of a plot or immersion. Which, considering Diablo had absolutely none of the above, is miraculous, in a bad way.

I really dislike the nearly endless enchanting in Torchlight, and I'm not a huge fan of the pets either... Mercenaries in D2 weren't nearly as overpowering, and you had some variation over them.

It seems like Torchlight also went overboard with hundreds of very similar weapons/armor, and away from the more methodical approach that I liked in D2, with armor that seemed to have a bit more... Design time put into it.

To me, special/set items for a class should be among the best things of that tier a class can wear, and have some unique things tied to them, whereas in Torchlight I could always just enchant my previous weapon/armor piece again instead of upgrading to a new one.

Also, for all the levels in the endless dungeon, itemization just stops at about level 60.
