If I was a billionaire, what is the first thing you would buy or do?

Me?

I would buy an IPad..my eyes can't take this tiny iPhone screen anymore.

2nd. I would buy a house on the ocean

I'd get a high rise penthouse with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, personal elevator and downtown parking in SD. I'd fill it with new gadgets (updating every release cycle) and would otherwise lead a fairly normal life.

This reminds me of that god awful song playing on some stations currently.... can't help but think when its on that all the things the singer says he would with the billion dollars is why he will never be a billionaire.

Of course, I'm extra cynical because I can't stand that kind of music.

I'd pay off my bills, keep my job and start looking at the coasts for a second home.

Billionaire?

I'd quit my job, pay off all my debts, and buy a house somewhere nice. Probably take up golf or something like that. Maybe get a sports car and a badass truck for offroading. Travel some more.

Millionaire?
Pretty much the same really. But more modest ;)

I'd buy you a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel).

Seriously, though?
1) Pay off all debts for myself, Taamar, and several among our friends & family.
2) A house (location as yet undetermined, although several come to mind and with a billion at my disposal, getting a house in each and traveling amongst them at will is a theoretical option)
3) A new car (I've always wanted a car that wasn't pre-owned) and one for Taamar as well.
4) Computers for each of us that match our desired specs, not just the specs we can afford.
5) All the cooking/crafting things Taamar has ever wished for but not been able to afford, from pots & pans to knives to sewing machines & sergers.

After that, it would simply be a matter of being able to afford a thing when one of us decides we'd like to have it. That would be wonderful.

My wife and I occasionally do some day dreaming on this topic, tho usually not with a billion dollars, but whatever the current Power Ball jackpot is.

That said, were I to become stupidly weathly here is what I would do, in order.

1. Move to an undisclosed location.
2. Purchase new cell phones and cancel all the old numbers.
3. Hire an accountant and a lawyer. Their job is to prevent me from being amazingly stupid with my new wealth and to make sure that I never have to work again.
4. Invest the lions share of the money in support of the above statement.
5. Carve out a couple million as "fun money" to go be silly with. i.e. pay cash for a Lamborghini, have a big *** party, etc.
6. Hold a retreat for my closest friends and family. At the retreat I'd meet with each of them individually to figure out something that they've always wanted or would make their lives more fulfilling that money would help fix. And then do that for/with them. One example is a good friend of mine who would very much like to be a cattle rancher. However, the amount of cash required to get that started up and viable is prohibitive. I'd get him started and going, make sure he's going to be viable, and in return I'd never have to buy beef again.
7. Design and build a new home
8. Travel extensively. Much of it by motorcycle.
9. Biddy biddy bum all day long.

I'd buy an American election and dictate policy. I wouldn't want to cause waves by doing anything different from the other billionaires.

Start a modest sized company. I'd have to figure out what we'd make of course, but it would be cool to have a well funded company that employs good people to make a quality product.

Invest a bunch of it. Spend a bunch of it on homes, cars, family.

1) Pay off all my bills.
2) Pay off all my parents' bills.
3) Save/invest at least 3/4 of the remainder.
4) Buy a nice, new house for Phe and myself.
5) Buy a new car for myself (Phe doesn't want one). Something roomier, but with excellent gas mileage.
6) Get a new computer.
7) Invest heavily in my channel.
8) ???
9) Profit!

Right there with you.

South Caribbean, out of the hurricane belt.

With a billion dollars, many of the above comments are superfluous. College funds, and such, are done by people without a billion dollars because they want to ensure they have the money to pay for the education of their children. Aizle has the right idea about investing well, but you really don't need to budget much for such pocket change items like a university education when you're talking about that much money.

Let's assume one invested terribly, placing all their money in some investment that only returned a stable 3% per annum (if you're not getting double-to-triple that over the long haul, you probably invested poorly). Now, inflation is going to average about 2% barring the inevitable economic collapse, so you're only making 1% once you account for the amount you need to grow your portfolio just to break even.

1% of a billion dollars is 10 million dollars a year.

How would we ever live on that? Oh wait...

"What would you do with a million dollars" questions are actually more likely to return financially responsible answers, because it is very hard to spend a billion dollars, unless you want a few squadrons of fighter jets or something.

I would also buy a helicopter. And lessons to fly said helicopter.

I would love to learn how to fly.

My answers are pretty much the same as everyone elses..

It does pose a question..

If one were to say, find a billion dollars, or win a billion dollar lottery, or somehow obtain a significantly large sum of money...

Where would you keep it?

Something tells me the teller would look at you funny if you walked into the bank and said.. "I'd like to make a deposit" and plunked down a billion dollars....
