Abiding by the Rules
Parents are the final authority when it comes to matters concerning their children. That sentence cannot be stressed enough and if all grandparents made a decision before their first grandchild ever came into the world to honour that message; there would be far fewer family disagreements. Parents, especially first timers, often have very specific ideas about how they would like their children to be raised. Decisions about feeding, sleeping, outings, and discipline have likely been well thought out and most parents have strong opinions as to how they will guide and direct their children. Grandparents must remember that although they have many years of experience in matters of childcare, the children in question are not their own and therefore the decisions about the children's care are not really theirs to make.

Read that, "MOM". Read it. Understand it. You better figure out really quickly who are the parents of that little boy.

Don't question us on what we ask. We don't need your reasons as to why you do or don't want to do what we want for our son when he is in your care.

You don't know how close you are to losing him at this moment. I swear it, one more false step and you lose the very thing you have been hoping for that would make you happy.

Don't cross us. He is our son, not little baby Foamy or FoamyBro. Do what we ask without commentary or you will only see him when (if) we decide to let you.

She actually had the nerve to pull out the line, "Well, I've raised two children." Really, F***ing wonderful. Oonagh's mom raised three, I guess she's better at it than you, right?
The other gem she pulled out (Said to Oonagh), "When I needed help, I asked my mother." Oonagh's response should have been, "Yeah, I do ask MY MOTHER."

Guess what "Mom"...you did a shitty job. One barely ever talks to you unless he needs something and I hate you.

Foamy - I've been giving you the same advice since we were 16.

Either **** or get off the pot.

What does he have to do Elmo, sit on his pot and yell "Will no one rid me of this turbulent parent?"

Kidding, just kidding, don't assassinate his mom.

That right there is plenty of reason to just stop letting her see your son.

You should sit down with your parents and have an honest conversation with them, with emotions involved. Agree beforehand that nobody is allowed to leave for a while, even after a heated conversation. Reconcile afterwards and everyone will feel better. Issues will be settled. Nobody might be in the "right", but it's very important that you all express yourselves to each other and finally forgive each other, and then move on.

Social exclusion should be a last resort, and is nearly as poisonous as letting her see the son... perhaps more so.

The baby has another set of grandparents. His social development won't be crippled. Hell, lots of kids grow up missing one set of grandparents anyway. Mini-Foamy will grow up just fine.

The social development of the grandparents and Foamy matters equally... in my opinion.

Foamy's mother has successfully alienated one child, and caused another (Foamy) to hate her. The price for making your children hate you is that you don't get to see your grandchildren, and that's doubly so if your children's spouses hate you even more. That's how the world works.

Foamy sounds as though his family is **** up. I happen to know a few people who have **** up families. For example, my nieces only know one set of grandparents, because the other grandparents are crazy and aren't allowed in the house. A buddy of mine made it a habit to not tell his parents his address and phone number whenever he moved. They have his phone number now, at least his cell phone, but I'm not sure they actually know his address even though it's been over a year since he bought his house.

The thing to remember is that Foamy has options. His family is **** up, and he hates his mother. Oonagh's family seems rather nice, welcoming, and entertaining according to stories that have accumulated here on the Glade. They're married, so now Oonagh's family is Foamy's family, and Foamy doesn't have to care that his mother's a *****. Yes, it would suck to be Foamy's mom in all of this, but she had thirty years to be a better mother, so **** her.

Foamy says his mother is "this close" to never seeing her grandkids again. I wonder why she's that close? Why isn't she already done? And I understand why. He doesn't want to hurt his mother's feelings. He doesn't have to! He can let Oonagh do it. She seems perfectly willing to tell the woman to go talk a long walk off a short pier. Really, this problem solves itself.

Corolinth - Because Foamy still cares about his father. Banishing his mother is effectively banishing his father as well.

You can argue around that one, but one member of a grandparent couple being allowed to come around when the other isn't will only make it tough on, in this case, Grandpa.

Me, if I meet Grandma I'm tempted to tell her I'm interviewing Oonagh for and close to offering her a job in California. Substantial raise, good benefits, daycare program, the whole nine yards. Tempted, but I'm not really that evil.

It's mostly for Foamy's sake that he needs to fix things with his mother. It's possible for everyone to reconcile. It takes a lot of effort, and things could get worse in the short run. But it's worth it.

Lex, not everything can be reconciled, not all people change, not all endings are happy. Sometimes, its for the best.

I disagree. The only times I haven't been able to reconcile things is when people decide to break off all communication with me.

That's anecdotal. You do understand your (limited) life experiences do not parallel some universal truth, except for maybe you.
