Technically, neither are they here. It's simply that a majority of debit cards are also MasterCards or Visas so the bank can pitch them as "check cards" that "work just like credit cards." Because actually going to ATMs, and thus, carrying cash, is a horrifying notion to middle class America. The ATM transactions themselves are processed via the banks and one of the ATM networks (STAR being the largest, still, I believe).

The big Canadian bank I work for has a deal with Mastercard. In fact, they gave me a Mastercard to access my low-interest credit line. I still keep a standalone bank card though for debit and ATM purposes.

Oh, I figured it was a commentary that they couldn't possibly accuse somebody who wasn't white, Christian, or male as a suspect in a crime. Because, you know, that'd be racist, sexist, or insensitive of another religion.
