Hardly. It was tribal and implied tribal warfare. The only way somone would unite the tribes would be if the tribes were fractured. While their relationship with their enviornment was more integrated, there are other peoples in our own world with similar existances.

No, it was always utopian. The tribes had no reason to be united before the Human incursions.

a) The Na'vi user neurotoxins for their arrows. Poison sucks for hunting as it tends to taint food. While it could have been a recent development, it seems unlikely.
b) the Na'vi have warriors... not hunters... warriors.
c) Humans hadn't been on Pandora that long yet several generations ago someone still had to tame that beast thing and unite the tribes

Apparently it is very rare. Like I said, a utopia. Also there are clearly ceremonial reasons for having warriors and weaponry. Proving your strength against others, etc. Several generations ago there might have been another external threat.

too many 3d directors feel the need to point out they're doing a 3d movie. (the POS yogi bear movie comes to mind though sharkboy & lavagirl or any of the other things work too) Avatar was the first 3d movie where I felt the 3d added to the story (improved the wonder of Pandora) without being (forgive the pun) in your face.

I completely disagree. The 2D movie while not bad, is nowhere as immersive to me as the 3D film. And I'm not a fan in general of 3D films. Avatar was really the first one that I felt used the technology well.

3D is utterly useless if things aren't popping out at you. The subtle thing he had going on where the vegetation was creeping out at the corners but everything else looked flat just didn't do it for me. If I don't feel like I can reach out and touch the things flying, then the 3D-effect is wasted.

All the 3D did for me was lower the color-quality and brightness of the film. And in fact, that's all 3D does for most movies, with a few notable exceptions. 3D is an ugly gimmick unless the entire movie is based around the 3D capabilities and truly immerses the audience in an almost interactive way, which Avatar failed to do. Oh, I understand why Cameron chose to do it in the subtle, understated way that Avatar handled it, and made the 3D almost incidental to the film, but unless the 3D effect is completely in your face, it's not worth having to wear the dark glasses and lower the far more important color saturation and brightness.

Most impressive 3D visual effect I've seen recently was the Dreamworks logo during the introduction of "How to Train Your Dragon." (Where you feel like you have to duck the fishing line.) Second best was the Pixar short film, "Day & Night" shown before Toy Story 3, which was completely intended for 3D and useless without it. Apart from that, nobody has made good use of 3D on film outside of Disney at their theme parks.

He touched on my issue with Avatar though, later on.

However, having to wear the stupid dark 3D glasses greatly detracted from the experience. As it stands, the only worthwhile uses I have seen for 3D in movies involve making the audience feel no longer that they are watching from the outside, but truly inserted into the movie. And that requires you to bring the 3D effect much closer to the viewer.

Guess I had a good set of glasses then, because I didn't even think about loss of brightness while watching the movie. Looked pretty great to me.

I don't specifically remember taking note of the dimming effect of the glasses when we saw Avatar, but I did notice it this weekend when we watched Tron Legacy in 3D. I think it's put me off of 3D movies for the time being.

You don't wear glasses IRL though I guess. Those of us who do, its less of an impact. Perhaps you need 3d contacts?

Polarized contacts. Completely feasible, but the market would never support it. People already get mad about putting on glasses, they wont wanna put something directly on their eye.

Besides, glasses-free 3D is already possible. After that I bet we go straight to hologram.

I wear glasses for mild myopia. The only times I wear them are when driving, or at the movie theater. They do make the 3D glasses an even bigger pain in the *** than they would otherwise be, however.


Also, I can't do contact lenses.

Yeah... There are already TV's announced that do it (Vizio, I think?) and the upcoming Nintendo 3DS handheld is going to be just that. Perhaps Engadget would be a good addition to your daily website reading :P

Keep in mind, it's not the in-your-face 3D that Talya likes, it's the depth-adding 3D that Cameron likes. Talya will have to wait for holograms!

I didnt so much mind the ham fisted liberal messaging as Coro put it so much as I minded how completely predictable and over the top it was. Granted, the guy is obviously no fan of the military but at least in Terminator it was just a mistake by the military that made Skynet, and in Abyss it was one rogue soldier going crazy. In Aliens the military were practically heroes, but of course there it was "big corporations" that got the treatment.

This movie though, so over the top beat you over the head with his ideology on top of a "can anyone possibly not know how this will end" 10 minutes into the movie? Just wasnt a good flick.

I cant comment on the 3D thing though obviously. The technical achievements I'll grant, the animation was good, but to me it's like the crappy video game with boring gameplay that wants to brag about how amazing the water effects are.
