See, this is what supporting 4e has wrought.

Lol.

On the other hand, I could see this as being kind of fun, depending on the sorts of cards they have. Glad it's a supplement, though.

Their flagship product is doing fairly well on that front.

This isn't the first instance of this type of product...the earliest one I recall offhand was made by Paizo for Pathfinder.

Indeed. Which, I might add, is a 3.5-based product. Well, SRD-derived product.

Point is, 4e resisted this longer!

I haven't been impressed by Pathfinder either. That having been said, investigating the earlier card offerings indicates that the WotC and Paizo stuff were merely record-keeping aids. I find them ridiculous, but not all that offensive. These from WotC are intended to influence gameplay. Apparently the game mechanics of 4e are such a failure, or the players and DMs are so inept and unimaginative, that this tragic further bastardization of Dungeons and Dragons was warranted.

Hell even TSR had simple record keeping cards:

Priest Spell Cards
Wizard Spell Cards
Psionic Power Cards

Hell I even made a set of 3x5 index cards that had every weapon/armor or misc equipment item and its stats from the 2e PHB.

I would even make some of those cards for my magic items.

It was easier to keep a set handy for the things I need as opposed to flipping through books or memorizing that crap.

But these are ridiculous. Again I would like to say Down with 4E. Gary Gygax did not die, he escaped the travesty that WoTC is turning his game into.

I thought the power cards were a pretty good idea. These, which turn your encounters into CCG matches, not so much.

As did I. I just used my example to expand upon what Shuyung stated right above me.

The cards I referred to by Paizo were plot twist cards meant to be used to change up gameplay.

My DM has been tempted to switch from standard 3.5 to Pathfinder. His lone reason for this, Druids. We have a druid in our group and he is pretty much over powered when held up to the rest of the group. Pathfinder changed this.

Other than that, I don't want to switch.

Ah, I see them. Still ridiculous, but extremely limited in distribution and utility. Mechanically, they're not much different than a potion. From a storytelling perspective, they have something to offer the less imaginative DMs and players. Plus which, I notice the plot twists have a number of potentially-detrimental-to-PCs options.

And, although the rules card for the Plot Twist cards states that a player can choose to use either the mechanical or storytelling piece of the card, it says nothing as to whether the DM can or can't implement a storytelling option in order for the player to receive the mechanical benefit.

Meanwhile, the WotC fortune card offering, while stating that
Wizards of the Coast wrote:
they are an enhancement that simulates blind luck, the winds of fate, or divine influence

ignores that half of that should be bad.

And further, they are not limited in distribution. They indeed turn the RPG into a CCG.

Well I have pretty much no reason to use the cards, I can't bring myself to nerdrage over 'em either. It's just kind of a re-emergence of a concept that's been used in RPGs in the past to add randomness.

Just like everything else with D&D, you're encouraged to use what you like and not use what you don't, so I don't see the problem. :)

So what are you going to do when one of your players brings in a deck?

They'd get that confused with this product that came out in September.
