The Hubble Space Telescope is a prime example of why we don't need to go to the moon for something like this. It's parked up in orbit above the Earth, where it gets no atmospheric interference, and it's fairly simple (in space-shuttle terms) to get to and do maintenance on, as opposed to being on the moon.
Actually, today's flight of the
X-37B makes me wonder about the mission of the other one they have that just ended in December after 225 days. Heck, who's to say that that thing didn't go to the moon?! They're not telling us at all what it did up there for 7 months.
