So I'm reading Julianne Moore's bio on IMDB and I catch this phrase:

My grammar nazi sense went into overdrive, screaming "she reprised the role, not recapitulated it!".
On a whim, however, I decided to look up the word recapitulate. I expected to discover either that there is no such word, or that it is somehow related to the meaning of capitulate (logical assumption, one would think), but I like to fact-check when something comes at me unexpectedly like that.
Instead, I discovered that the word does in fact exist and it's meaning isn't remotely related to that of capitulate.

This wasn't the last thing I expected to find - this wasn't even on my list.

I learned the word in freshman (hs) bio in the context of the phrase given.

Yeah, well ... my school system taught me to spell "dilemna" with an 'n', so ...

Never showed up in my schooling either. 'Recap' was used from elementary school on, but the long form was never mentioned.

With two m's is still a recognized spelling, if not considered the right one and quickly headed toward archaic.

Besides, I was given extra credit for watching the moon landing and writing a report on it. I thought that was pretty cool.

Erm, no, Michael..."dilemma" is the right spelling, "dilemna" is not in any English dictionary on either side if the pond. Confirmed by a quick google search before I posted, and autocorrect on my iPhone not liking the "mn" spelling :p

As to the OP, never knew "recap" came from "recapitulate". Huh.
