I'm not against caning and such either, actually, although most Americans would probably balk at the idea.
We've had a few judges over the years try some alternative sentencing...I remember reading stories here and there about things like a judge sentencing a person to stand outside the store they shoplifted from and wear a big sign that says "I'm a shoplifter" or something like that.
I do truly believe that public humiliation for these lesser crimes is a much bigger deterrent than fines or jail time.

Oh, and what about that state that put all their prisoners in tents to do day labor and stuff...no TV or AC or other luxuries...what ever happened with that?

Bring back chain gangs.

It is an effective deterrent.

It would not have given this man a feasible way to get the treatments he needs. He probably would have had to have taken more drastic measures, then, and actually stolen something for the purpose of getting the money.

The problem here isn't the man. It's a society that has backed a man into a corner with no other recourse or options. (Which isn't to say I disagree with the caning option. Of course, this wouldn't have happened in Singapore. They have about the best healthcare system in the world. Rather low on the personal freedom thing, though.)

I disagree. This is the fault of the individual not society.
Preventive measures to ensure health- individual
Seeking available treatment (which was free and available) when an issue is discovered (chest protrusion)- individual.
Committing a crime while also talking about how you're working the system and going to retire to a condo on Myrtle beach - individual.

If he has the money to retire to a condo on Myrtle beach, he can afford to pay the reduced price he'd be charged at the clinics. He is stealing from every one of us. I hope the teller files a civil lawsuit and he loses his retirement funding.

Always having accessible health care is more important to achieving socioeconomic mobility, "equality of opportunity," and freedom in general than accessible education.

I'll see your absurd fiat declaration, and raise you. The earth is made of blue legos.

It was accessable. It was free. He just needed to put forth the effort to obtain it.

If I'm unemployed and I have a protrusion out of my chest, I am going to sell assets, seek charitable programs, barter etc to ensure my health. He did not. He refused assistance from his family to "not be a burden". Now he is a burden to the rest of us. Feel free to hold a bucket at an intersection for the Guy, but don't pretend he is a victim.

You do not, and have never had the right to health care. You can not demand a service of another. There are many organizations near him who were more than willing to assist him for free or a reduced cost. He decided to commit a crime to achieve what he could have for free. I was hoping his state had a statute that prevented a criminal from profiting from a crime. The prison shouldbonly have the responsibility to MAINTAIN the prisoner. Not repair him. Not give him a sex change(can't wait for the person to commit a crime for reassignment surgery). They should return him to society in the same condition they got him. Feed him. Clothe him. Give him a sheltered place to sleep for his sentance. If he wants to have healthcare beyond maintenance then he needs to pony up on the same terms he could have gotten without being a criminal.

How is that more drastic? In both cases, he's depriving others of the fruits of their labor. By leeching off the prison system, he's just spreading it out over more people.

He didn't rob $1 from a bank. He's robbing $.50 from everybody in the state.
